779.0. "Weight Programs Biased?" by JUNCO::BERNIER () Fri Jan 08 1993 18:32

I have attended several different weight programs, Weight
Watchers, Diet Workshop ect... and it is my impression that
these are all geared towards women, which I don't feel is
    	very fairs.

For example, they read their prenstation from a prepared
program. One scenario was a bus trip to New York and they
were going dress shopping, stopping in for cappuccino (?sp)
at local bakery shop ect.....I mean...if it were males we'd
be going to a sports or automotive event and hit a pub for
    	a brew.

I just couldn't relate to a lot of their presentations. I
considered being an instructor but because of this I decided
    	against it.

    	What do you think?

Yes, I can understand that this is annoying. After all, as a woman, I
have to put up with many things that are geared towards men....

779.2biased? The program, a little; you, a little more?UHUH::D_CARROLLa woman full of fireMon Jan 11 1993 17:2512
Dress shopping? Seems odd they didn't just say "clothes shopping",
which is gender neutral. yes, I would find that annoying. In fact, a
a woman, I am faced with this stuff ALL THE TIME and find it annoying.
    bring it to their attention.

But I'm confused - what is "female" about cappucino? Don't men drink
coffee? Don't women "go for a brew"?

Automotive shopping is a "man's thing"? Guess I'll have to remember to
ask my father to go pick up those spark plugs I need for me.

Yes, I guess I am......a little. I understand where you are
coming from, my apologies. But you get my drift. When *I* go
out with my friends, we have never gone for cappucino unless
they have started putting it in 16oz. brown bottles and
dramatically altered the taste. It seems to me that the are
similar amounts of overweight men as well as women, yet mostly
women attend weight control classes. Any ideas on why that is??

I wonder what the ratio really is.......

Also, clothes shopping is something *men* generally don't do as
a group activity. Dress shopping is something *most* men don't
    	do (at least for themselves!).

Well, back to my dog house... ;-)

I think more women are in weight loss programs because I think there is
more societal pressure on women to be thin (read: attractive) than men.
And because, for whatever reason, women are more prone to eating
    disorders.

Good point...but I think everyone is prone to eating disorders.

I think that men generally shy away from that type of thing
because the majority of members are female, and they (I) feel
out of place. After a few meetings I felt comfortable.

779.6Now is the time for good men and women...POCUS::FEINMANTue Jan 12 1993 21:4019
Wow, I see both sides of this unfortunate issue...

On the one hand, my husband has brought the same complaint to my
attention. He and I joined WW together and everything is geared toward
the female perspective and female eating program, he constantly has to
compensate for the different exchanges allowed for men. The new WW
commercials are particularly gender-specific (be a new woman??), what
if you are happy as a MAN?

On the other hand, I agree that the reason there are so many more women
in these groups is that society places much more pressure on us to
conform to norms of beauty, which seems to mean thin. Men only have to
deal with being "successful", what a drag...when will we allow each
other (and ourselves) to just BE?

In any case, good luck with the struggle, it is truly an androgynous
    one.

Since about 80% of the people who join WW are women, WW caters to them.

That's what I would do, if I were running WW, too.

Then again, perhaps they'd bring in more men if they were
less biased (assuming they are, based on the input here)...

Perhaps a little late, but here in Minneapolis WW has "FMO" meetings (For
Men Only). It is run by a female leader who also handles regular
(mostly women) meetings. You may want to suggest this to one of your
    local leaders.
