What time of day do you exercise? In the morning or at night?
Do you stretch when you warm up?
Are you overweight? If so, how many pounds?
What leg/hip exercises do you do?
What abdominal exercises do you do?
How long have you had this pain and what motions aggravate it?

| I've occasionally suffered from back pain during/after jogging, but
that was when I was obese, and passed when I got thinner.
STretching is part of the answer, another part is REALLY good running
shoes with cushioning that can take the pounding and deliver relief to
your body, I recommend NIKE or ASICS shoes.

| In reply to .1
I usually exercise in the evenings, after work.
In the months I did not exercise, I have gained 5 pounds, I'd like
to lose this. I am not overweight. My ardent desire is to
shape up, lose that fat in the tummy and the thighs.
I do a fair amount of stepping exercises, leg raises, and crunches for the
for the stomach. After which I take a 25 minutes brisk walk/jog.
After maybe, 2-3 days of a good workout,
I would develop the backcahe, and it would last
anywhere from 2-3 days. This not only breaks the momentum,
but also makes me feel ill when my intention is to feel fit.
The ache is in the lower back, hurts when I get up suddenly,
or am not sitting real upright.

The leg raises are probably the culprit. Do you do them while lying
on the floor? Both legs raised at once? Those are very hard on the
back.
You can add a cushion to the floor, in the small of your back to give
you some support, modify it so you raise one leg at a time, or do the
leg raises on a roman chair (you stand upright, rest your elbows on
pads, then bring the knees to the chest).
Also learn to stretch before and after you work your back. Before is
critical to preventing injury, after will help recovery.

| re .-1
Yes, those leg raises are *deadly*, I've had back problems for years
after having had several horseback-riding injuries. My doctor
absolutely forbids leg raises because they are so hard on your back,
especially for women, who generally have shorter backs and longer lags
proportionally than men.

| One more thing, back injuries are more common among people who exercise
in the morning. Vertebrae fill with fluid and swell during the night.
So, if you exercise first thing in the morning, take it easy and makde
sure you stretch, especially your back.

744.8 | Stretch before getting into bed | ESCROW::ROBERTS | | Fri May 15 1992 13:22 | 6 |
| Yes, exercising in the morning is not the best idea for people with
back problems. Also, I've found that the mornings are easier if I do
some stretching just before going to bed. This way I'm not quite so
stiff when I wake up and hobble into a hot shower.

| There are two things that give me a backache (I am sure both have been
mentioned here):
1. Running when too overweight. I walk until my back can take my
running. I start with 1/2 mile run and then increase bit by bit as I
loose weight.
2. Exercising without stretching.
( I lied - I have 3 things not 2 :-))
3. Exercising incorrectly. there are some exercises that must be done
correctly - if not they will hurt instead of help.
