| As a sidenote, PAM and other spray on oils are not "pseudo-grease"
they are actual genuine fat. The only advantage is that by
spraying it on instead of spreading it on like shortening or
pouring it on like oil, you use less. It is not calorie-free
by a long shot...

716.3 | PAM vs MAZOLA | MLCSSE::MAHON | | Thu Jan 30 1992 22:19 | 5 |
| I was reading in a fitness magazine about dieting and they
suggested buying mazola spray. What is the difference between
these two?

can. there are several brands of oil that have been modified or are
better for us health wise.

716.5 | re .3: PAM vs MAZOLA, and a side comment on RESTAURANT PAM | RANGER::PESENTI | Only messages can be dragged | Fri Jan 31 1992 12:25 | 14 |
| The difference is mostly the manufacturer.
By the way, my last trip to BJs (wholesale club) I bought the giant restaurant
sized can (shrink wrapped 2 to a package, so I'll have enough for my next
incarnation, too) of PAM.
This stuff is MUCH different than the usual supermarket variety. It has a
fragrance of coconuts (but no coconut oils), and some unusual additive that
causes it to spray on as a white foam. The can says that the additive is for
the purposes of portion control. I.e., it lets you see how much you are
spraying. When you apply heat, the additive evaporates immediately (it is not
flamable, but maybe that's what the fragrance comes from), and the foam
subsides. Other than this, it tastes the same as regular PAM, which is to
say that I can't detect a flavor in the cooked food.

716.6 | oils are not all the same | TLE::TLE::D_CARROLL | a woman full of fire | Fri Jan 31 1992 19:52 | 13 |
| I don't know the difference between Pam and Mazola but I could venture
a guess. All fats have the same amount of calories, but some are
higher in saturated fats. Canola and Olive oil are the best, tropical
oils are the words. Perhaps Mazola is lower in saturated fats than
Pam.
I've seen spray-on Olive Oil, and when my current can of Pam runs out,
I'm going to buy one of those. Consumer Reports did a special report
on oil (including spray oils) recently and apparantly the olive oil
sprays don't do much in the way of flavor (like high quality ("extra
virgin" OO would) but they are healthier.

PAM has corn oil, grain alcohol, and lecithin. I don't know why
Mazola would be any better.
re:.6
Diana, olive oil is only mono-unsaturated, meaning it has more
saturated fats than poly-unsaturated oils, like vegetable oils.
Olive oil is a good oil because it works to lower cholesterol, not
because it's low in saturated fats.

I wish we had spray oil over here. At the moment all we have is oil
in bottles. Would it work if I put oil in a water spray do you think?

| If you'd be using it, say, to oil a frying pan, try this. Put a tiny
amount of oil on a paper towel, and just rub it onto the pan.

MOTTS (applesauce etc) and PAM (cooking spray) have been advertising
lately that replacing the oil in a regular cake mix recipie with
applesauce and using PAM on the pan instead of shortening and flour
cuts 612 calories and 72 grams of fat out of the cake. Using this
method 1/12 of cake will have only 51 calories and 6 grams of fat!
I haven't tried this yet (can't quite trust myself with the other 11/12th's
of the cake) but am wondering if anyone else has and weather or not
the cake tastes the same using this method as it does using the oil.
In case anyone has not seen it and would like to try it here's the
recipie:
1(18 to 20 oz) packaged cake mix
PAM cooking spray
MOTTS regular, natural or cinnamon apple sauce
Prepare cake mix according to package directions using PAM to grease
baking pan(s). Substitute an equal amount of applesauce for the oil.
Pour batter into prepared pan(s). Bake and cool according to package
directions.
Suggested topping: Mott's applesauce and cinnamon.
