646.1 | Not for long term use | OFFPLS::DESHARNAIS | | Thu Feb 14 1991 15:56 | 22 |
| I tried hypnosis two years ago and I didn't find it successful for
long term weightloss. The person I went to was a registered hypnotist
and helps people with all kinds of disorders. I was amazed that I
could be hypnotized at all, but I was and it was a wonder experience.
I wrote about this in the EATING_DISORDER notes file. But maybe a
person has to keep going to sessions. I found it expensive so I couldn't
keep going. The hypnotist told me to come back anytime I felt I
needed reinforcement. I personally don't know anyone who has had it
work for them, but maybe there are people out there who have been
successful. The same for smoking. Two of my friends tried it and it
didn't work for them. I personally gave up smoking a pack a day cold
turkey after reading an article in Readers Digest (20 years ago) about
acutual cases of people who lost their voice box to cancer. That
scared me enough. Not being able to ever speak again was a shocker.
Most people realte smoking to lung cancer as I did. I tried a
cigarette just once 1 year after giving it up and I was so sick and
dizzy, I was convinced I didn't need that in my body.
Good luck

I also tried the hypnosis, and it didn't work for me. Maybe I didn't
really get hypnotized. That seminar to stop smoking and weight control
is basically geared for the smokers. They leave a 1/2 hour at the end
to do the weight_control hypnosis. I think that it is a waste of
money, but it might work for you. Good Luck.

646.3 | Another's Experience | MILPND::PIMENTEL | | Tue Feb 19 1991 17:47 | 10 |
| This may be too late but I also tried hypnosis which was a one time
thing with a cassette tape included. This was offered when I was
in the Acton facility. There were about 12 or 15 people there. I
don't know one of us who got thin as a result. I did everything we
were told to do, exercised, drank water and played the tape a.m. and
p.m I was amazed that I could push my food away and felt full after a
meal, but I did not loose much more than 2 or 3 lbs in 2 months.
Let us know how you are doing.

This is much later and maybe by now you've had some results and
experiences in Hypnosis.
I did try is, and found I was easily Hypnotized. It was extremely
relaxing and it did work for me. I had to stop due to $$$ and time. I
went to a private one in Leominster and her hours, for her sake were
limited. I would love to go back.
My sister had the success story. She stopped smoking and drinking all
at the same time and her weight was helped too. Even though......she
has been up and down in the weight department since. I find the use
and or need of the "extra help" with regards to hypnosis, great for the
time period in your diet, whatever diet you are on. It won't like
anything else keep you slim for the rest of yourlife, but might give
that added strength during the difficult time of struggling with
will-power.
Best of luck...

646.5 | smoke and eat | GLDOA::RINI | | Fri May 31 1991 22:00 | 11 |
| I had two seperate experiences with hypnosis. A group session for
smoking cessation and a private series for weight loss.
The one for smoking worked great while the one for weight loss didn't
seem to have any affect.
As best as I can surmise, the hypnosis worked for the smoking because
it was a discrete event (smoke or no smoke) and failed for the weight
loss because of the continuous nature of having to eat.
