I'm looking in to purchasing a treadmill and was wondering if anyone who has purchased one has found it worthwhile. Consumer Reports more or less indicated that eventually it will go the way of hula hoops and pet rocks, ie.. another fad. However, once the novelty of buying one wears off, I've got to think that usage of it, together with a proper diet, should help to keep the weight off. Any comment(s) pro or con would be appreciated.

My mother (who is 52) just purchased a treadmill a few months ago for about $250 (on sale) and loves it. She usually walks every night for exercise, but in the winter it's too dangerous to walk at night so she bought the treadmill. I've used it myself to and it's an excellent way to exercise. My mom walks on it every night, and although she doesn't need to lose weight (she only weighs 118 lbs), it's great for toning up too. I'd LOVE one myself, but can't afford it. So, every once in a while I pop by moms to use hers! I think it's a good investment. Linda
641.2 | Treadmill yes! Stair CLimber NEVER! | CECV01::AZARIAN | Tue Jan 29 1991 12:28 | 13
I know several people who have them, from the most fancy (the bed raises and lowers) to the basic old model that didn't even have a motor. They are safe and if nothing else aerobic exercise. Please try to stay away from the stair steppers. My sister is a physical therapist with a specialty in sports medicine and orthopaedics, all they see are people who are getting seriously pulled and ripped muscles in the groin, upper legs and buttocks from the inproper use (which is apparently pretty easy to do!) of this very avante garde equipment. Go with the treadmill (my mom got hers from a grocery store bulletin board!... almost new and in just fine condition for very short money) Your heart will LOVE you! Lolly
641.3 | Easy Glide[r]? | CIVIC::VORBEAU | Fri Feb 01 1991 20:49 | 16
I've been considering a walking-in-place machine also. I was wondering about the Easy-glide(r?). Does anyone know about it? I've seen it on tv-it folds to slide under a couch or bed..Is it any good? worth the money(less than the treadmill I think). I pulled a muscle using the treadmill so have stayed away from it. I prefer something that I can control more closely as far as speed is concerned. I was considering using it while watching television in the evening as that seems to be the only free time I have. I found that the stationary bike I had a few years back made too much noise for this kind of dual activity. I hadn't thought of looking for a second-hand one from a disillusioned user!!! I'll get on it right away. I just found this notes file today and feel like starting in the 1987 notes and reading it page by page... Reducing the food intake doesn't seem to be working these days so want to try some useful exercise in the few minutes a day that I have left.

To revive an old topic, I recommend a treadmill to anyone seeking to lose weight or maintain fitness. I have seen good results from watching TV from onboard my treadmill. Without the TV (or music), it would be a truly tedious activity. With the advent of the Proform CrossWalk and others, treadmill technology is going crazy right now. My home unit is now a bit over a year old, but it does exactly what I need for it to do: power incline, 10 mph, programmable workout, heartrate monitor, etc. Best investment I've made in recent memory.
