619.0. "Exercise ? Help!" by CECV01::AZARIAN () Thu Nov 01 1990 13:14

    A common lament these days at DEC, I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I
    could teach Weight Watchers for all the times I've been there. I just
    feel like my mouth is on a self distruct pattern. I've been covering
    two people's jobs since January, my husband was laid off in March, we
    have multiple mortgages to cover, I'm still recovering from a ruptured
    disk so the amount of exercise I can do and the type is limited and I'm
    eating my brains out! I'm 50 lbs overweight!
    You would think that the only are of my life I could happily be in
    control of is my eating habits, but it's worse than ever. Eating
    correctly is expense!

    Does anyone out there with lower back problems (L4-5 S-1) have any
    ideas for exercise? I'm not a good swimmer and the real unfortunate is
    that walking is the chief agravation of my disks! I feel like I'm
    trapped in H-ll and it's not hot... it's just FAT down here!

I've experienced, and I think its a common reaction, lower back
problems when I've been under stress for a long period of time.
Also, being overweight has, in my experience, caused lower back
problems too. Putting the two together, it should be no wonder
that you're having problems...I think being out of work and
worried about money is just about as bad as it gets!

For myself, I've found that laying on the floor, flat on my back,
with my legs bent and the shin part resting on a hassock or low
stool, is the best thing for a bad back. I would not try any
exercise. I hope this is something that you can use.
619.2For a Weak BackRANGER::PEASLEEFri Nov 02 1990 17:0315
    The best exercise for your back is stretching. Here are a few
    suggestions:
    1. Lie on your back, knees bent and legs curled up, arms stretched
    out by your sides. With legs bent turn your hips to your left while
    you turn your head to the right and vice-versa. This will stretch
    out your back and you'll feel *alot* better.
    2. Remember windmills in school? Do something similar touching right
    hand to left toe, then left hand to right toe - its ok to bend your
    knees - feel for the gentle stretch in your lower back.
    3. Sit up on the floor with legs straight in front of you and turn
    at the waist to the right, then left.
    I learned most of these exercises in physical therapy for a back
    problem.

    Good Luck!
619.3Look Out Chubby Checker!SYSTMX::AZARIANFri Nov 02 1990 18:079
    Sounds like I'll be gently twisting (look out chubby checker) and
    stretching this weekend. I've been on a regime of stretching stuff,
    but I swear muscles get to know the pattern and dont really stretch
    anymore. A different pattern of exercise might do the trick.

    Thanks!
