560.0. "What can I put in my desk??" by MSDOA::MCMULLIN () Fri Feb 23 1990 12:03

I have a question. What would be some good things to buy to keep in my
desk to snack on?? I've thought about low-cal Hot Chocolate and WW
Popcorn, but what are some other suggestions??

    Thanks,

    Virginia

Hi Virginia! How are you doing? Try these:

WW Soups (some cans have pop-top covers) are yummy, but you'll
       have to nuke them.
    Raisins (2 tblsp = a fruit)
    WW peanuts

I keep a bag of carrots along with veggie peeler in my desk drawer at
all times. This help with the munchies as well as the hungries. Also
when your blood sugar drops, it helps bring it back up to normal.

Good luck!! It works for me.

    Hi,
I would also suggest carrots, celery or any other raw vegetables you
    like.
If you desperately need something "sweet"use sugarless candies or
gum -- careful on quantities !!
As a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack the best would be an apple
    or an orange.

    Good luck.
    Mario.

I like Quaker Oat Squares for an out-of-the-box snack.
    	They are slightly sweet.

If you need something salty, Pretzels are a good low-fat choice.

    What about:

         * a note that says "It's OK to be hungry now and then."

         * a cut out from a catalog of something you really want,
such as a swimsuit or a new outfit.

         * a picture of someone you love to remind you to love
yourself, too, and that loving yourself MAY mean
not snacking until lunch or dinner.

    Just a thought...

560.7SOME SNACKS THAT HELP MEESKIMO::MANDEVILLEThu Mar 01 1990 12:1216
I WOULD KEEP A CAN OF LITE FRUIT THAT IS VERY GOOD AND ONLY
ABOUT 90 OR SO CALORIES FOR THE WHOLE SMALL SIZE CAN. ITEVEN COMES
IN A FLIP TOP CAN.ANOTHER THING IS BREAD STICKS AND LOW SODIUM WHEAT
THINS THEY ARE ABOUT 40 CALORIES FOR 10 CRACKERS.
FROZEN YOGURT HAS BEEN MY SALVATION AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK AND
I HAVE BEEN ON WW NOW SINCE OCTOBER AND HAVE LOST TO DATE 67 POUNDS
SO I GUESS I MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. WW'S ALSO HAS LITTLE
BAGS OF ONION ,BARBEQUE, AND CHEDDAR TREATS THEY COME IN A SERVING
SIZE BAG THAT MOST MARKETS SELL YOU CAN EASILY STORE ONE IN YOUR
    DESK FOR A SNACK.
I WILL SAY ALSO THAT POPCORN IS GREAT AS IT LETS YOU CHEW AND
    FEEL SATISFIED.
GOOD LUCK AND I HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL IN SOME WAY.

Pretzels - low in fat (get unsalted, thereby low in sodium)
    fruit
grapes - great because you can just keep popping them in and feel
    like you're 'eating' something.
    gum - cinnamon flavor
    popcorn
angel food cake with fresh fruit (no fat)

560.9Bubble Gum....yum yumRHETT::WILLIAMSFri Mar 02 1990 13:4216
Somethings that work for me:

popcorn, rice cakes, mixed unsalted nuts, trail mix,
dried fruit, apples, oranges, pears, banannas,
grapefruit(peeled and eaten by sections), lemons, crackers,
herbal tea, cup of soup, ice (having an ice machine
in the vending area of the cafe is an excellent idea, a perk in ALF)
my all time favorite....carefree sugarless BUBBLE GUM

Granted some of these suggestions are from the vending machine
and I don't have all of these in my desk at any one time... :-)
In fact right now all I have is the BUBBLE GUM...POP!!!

happy snacking....

560.10Sugarfree does not mean Calorie freeTOOK::GEISERFri Mar 02 1990 14:3611
RE .9 - be careful. I just found out that sugarless gums aren't
necessarily low calorie. Most sugarless gums have sorbitol in them.
Sorbitol has just as many calories in it as sugar. The sugarless gums
are "expressly for not promoting tooth decay" (taken directly off my
package of Dentyne Sugarfree gum). They do not have sugar, but they DO
have just as many calories as regular gum. Sorry to burst your bubble
    :^)

WW "lets" you chew 5 sticks of gum a day for free.
    That's sugar-less or sugar-free gum.

Also, beware "trail mix" and certain crackers. Many trail mixes
contain coconut oil (highly saturated fat), and many crackers
    use tropical oils.

When/where did you get this info? I seem to recall being told (about
a year ago) that all gum, sugarless or not, was to be counted as 10
	optional calories per stick!

Not bad, if it helps you get through the afternoon.

Got that gum info last week from Andrea, leader at Leominster Thursday

I just bought something that is a combination of the popcorn and
rice cakes that you mentioned - popcorn cakes. I can't eat just
plain rice cakes - no taste. But the popcorn mixed in with the
rice gives it some flavor. They are really pretty good.

I keep raisins, prunes and HOL GRAIN Salt/Sodium Free Whole Wheat
or Rice Snack thins. Low in calories, no fat, high in fiber. I
keep fiber type snacks around and drink lots of water. The HOL
GRAIN take some getting used to, like air popcore with not butter
    or salt.

I keep wholemeal matzo in my draw and usually in the afternoon I have a
    square (no butter), or bananas.

Lately because I've added more exercise in my week I have been very
very hungry, so rather than fall asleep I grab carbs.

560.18Help for a Sweet ToothODIXIE::BAILEYWed Mar 13 1991 14:299
I have found a wonderful snack that curves my sweet tooth. Mini Rice
Cakes they come in many different flavors Honey Nut is my favorite.
They have Apple Cinnamon, Nacho Cheese, Terriyaki and many more. They
are made by HAIN and can be found in the Health Food section at the
Grocery Store, or any health food store. 5 cakes are 60 calories and
less than one gram of fat.

    I love em!!!
