517.0. "Jazzercise" by MSDOA::MCMULLIN () Thu Sep 28 1989 10:34

I saw a Jazzercise Demo at the Fair over the weekend and am seriously
thinking about dropping out of Weight Watchers and joining Jazzercise.
The reason I'll have to drop Weight Watchers is because the nights I
can go to Jazzercise (twice a week) are also the nights they offer WW
close to my home. I've got all my WW books and really feel like if I
can get motivated by Jazzercise, maybe it'll be the extra little
incentive to keep me on program.

Does anyone go to Jazzercise class? How do you like it?

The Jazzercise is a varation of Aerobics, isn't it? Doing exercies
in a group and to music is a lot more fun than doing the old boring
workout alone. WW and Jazzercise would be a great combination.
Is there any why you could juggle the schedules, different class
    nights?
Memphis is a big enough place so they should have more places offering
    classes.
The classes [Jazzercise ] should be 3 times a week to get more benifit.
if only two, you'll have to find some way to get the exercise by
yourself on the other night. I'm suprised a professional place
would offer only two/week. There's a number of questions you might
want to ask before joining. Do they help establish your target
exercise zone. Do they give you an oppertunity in the routine to
check that you are in the target range. How do they work new people
into the program. Do they adequately both warm you up and cool
you down. What training do their instructors have? What kind of
floor do they work out on.

    have fun!

    	Virginia,

You might want to check out the discussion in ELESYS::AEROBICS
(press KP7 to add), note 229 (and 57, too I believe). Jazzercise
is a lot of fun - I did it all spring/summer.

    Ed,

It's not necessarily the WW/Jazzercise schedule that's giving me the
conflict, but I bowl on Monday nights, church on Wednesday nights, etc.
I feel like if I bowl on the Monday's, Jazzercise on Tue and Thur and
maybe the rest of the time I can ride my exercise bike at home. I
picked up a brochure at the Fair on Jazzercise and it told about three
different ways they have you check your target rate during class, it
tells you to bring an exercise mat (which I bought at lunch), it gave
the approx. amount of time for the warm up session, the actual
Jazzercise, and the cool down. I feel like it is really well
monitored; that's one of the main reasons I think I'd like it, too. I
also belong to a spa, but they're instructors are just people they hire
off the streets with no real training. Thanks for all the help you
offered in things to find out.

    re .2,

    Amy,

Thanks for the pointer!!! I've heard it's really fun!!

517.4I liked it!!MSDOA::MCMULLINFri Sep 29 1989 11:2814
Well, I went to Jazzercise last night and I really liked it. When I
first got there I was in a really bad mood after having words with a
co-worker yesterday, and since it's the end of the quarter, I was
really tired and drained feeling. I keep up with the class fairly
easily (although my coordination is not the greatest in the world ;-)),
about the first 1/4 of the class I was drained, but it seemed like the
longer I went the better I felt and by the time I left, I was in a lot
better mood, felt better, and had more energy. Some of my arm and leg
muscles are a little achey, but nothing I can't cope with. The leader
kept telling us to pace ourselves and I never felt out of breath. I'm
planning on going back next week.

Which only goes to prove, exercise can be fun! And the more you
participate, the more fun it is.

I figure, I got it a lot easier that those slim, trim foks in my
class, its like I started with over 80 pounds of weights on, and
now the weights are off. Just think when all 190 pounds of weight
    are off.
    Keep it up

    DIRECT SOURCE TO JAZZERCISE:

My best friend is a jazzercise instructor, and I can find out any
kind of information about this type of exercise that you might have.
From my own experience with jazzercise I know that it is a lot of fun
and that it seems the best and safest form of exercise. There is a
proper warm up and cool down. The instructors give you different
exercises to do if you have certain problem areas like your back.

A little added tid bit of information, for those of you that would like
to work out 3 times a week and can only find two classes offered in
your area or to fit in your schedule. There is going to be a second
home video. Ray, my friend that is an instructor, is in this tape. It
hasn't been released as of yet....however I have seen it, and it is
    terrific!

The tape should be coming out soon. The exact date I can find out for
you. If you need help finding classes in your area I am sure he would
    be happy to assist.

Jazzercise is fun!! It was invented to be both fun and productive no
matter what size you are. Believe me if Ray loves it as much as he
does it has to be fun.....Because we both used to Flunk physical ed.
because we didn't like the class. And now he is a full time
    instructor.

517.8Jazzercise, you bet!ASHBY::LINDEBORGTue Nov 14 1989 14:4524

Jazzercise is the best!!!!! I've been a 3day/week Jazzerciser now for
    a little over a year.

I lost 25 lbs. w/ diest workshop the summe of '88 and deceided that I
needed to tone up what was left. Jazercise did it! It is a combination
of warm up high or low impact areobics (you choose by doing either the
regular version of the exercise of the "lighter side" that the
instructor demonstrates through the class for each routine), with a
cool down and a 20 or so minute stretch and tone floor routine after
    the aerobics.

It has done tremendous things for my physical AND mental well being
and I feel like my week is incomplete without the class. I also
have the newest Jazzercise tape (it's called Fitness Now!) and I do
that at least one other day per week of whenever I can't get out of
work in time to make it to the regular class.

I'm back in diet workshop too to get rid of that last ten pounds! I
feel so motivated this time that I don't think anythingwill stop me!
