513.1 | Donut vs. Muffin | OCTAVE::ROCH | | Tue Sep 19 1989 11:10 | 9 |
| I'm really not sure of the calorie content, but there was an article in
the Pittsburgh Press this past spring stating that a Dunkin Donut Oatbran
Muffin has more fat and calories than one of their bavarian cream donuts!
Makes you wonder, eh?
Who knows though, they could have changed ingredients by then....

| I also read that article about the bran muffin.
Also intesting was a Mcdonald's salad with Thousand Island
dressing was 640 calories compared to a hamburger of 230.
Better off with the hamburger!
(no fries of course!)

.0>Just a guess..........300 each?
It depends on the bakery.
Sugar and fat can really add up.
You can make your own muffins and have 'em come in around 200
each, with bran muffins even lower (the bran fiber is indigestible,
so no calories)

| I just take the info that the calorie counter book says and muliply
by 2. It might be on the high side or the low side, as long as you
don't cut it too close with you daily intake you should be fine.
I never had any luck with counting calories so I'm lax when it come to
getting the exact number down.

| From the Tufts University Diet & Nutrition Letter, May 1989
Size(oz) Calories Fat(gm) Sodium (mg)
Dunkin' Donuts Bran 3.5 353 13 591
Dunkin' Donuts Corn 3.3 347 13 577
Dunkin' Donuts Blueberry 3.1 263 10 347
Dunkin' Donuts Banana
Nut 3.1 327 12 357
Dunkin' Donuts Apple
Spice 3.2 327 11 382
Dunkin' Donuts Cherry 3.3 317 10 382
They list a bunch of other brands as well. The article
accompanying the chart did note that the bran muffin from Dunkin'
Donuts had 122 more calories than their Bavarian creme filled
donut covered with chocolate frosting, and between 35-40% more
fat.
And, as Mike stated, they agreed it is difficult to determine
exact amounts of calories and fat because it does vary from shop
to shop.

Thanks Amy for the very interesting info. If I read this correctly, this chart
is saying that filled donut is approx 230 calories. WOW! According to THE ALL
IN ONE CALORIE COUNTER BY JEAN CARPER, a yeast raised DUNKIN DONUTS plain donut
is 160 and a glazed is 168!
That's quite a discrepancy between 230 and 168!

Chuck,
I'd say there's a big difference between a glazed donut and a
Bavarian Cream-filled donut, which is where the discrepancy lies.
I'm no donut expert :^) but the glazed just has the coating, where
the Bavarian has the chocolate coating and the cream filling! I'm
sure that's where the extra calories (and fat) come from...

I'll take a stab at it ... a slice of Papa Gino's cheese pizza
must be about 200-250 calories.

Writing them down would never work. I have a paperback called "The All in one
Calorie Counter" by Jean Carper. It's very good. It has most NAME BRAND foods
as well as many popular entrees. I keep a running total in my head. I'm an
accountant and keep track of numbers quite well ;^)
I've lost 3-4 lbs in going on 4 weeks. I am VERY satisfied with this progress.
