| Virginia,
Don't be too hard on yourself. Learning to eat right is just that,
a learning process. Nobody is perfect. Believe me, I sympathize
with you. and I agree, if I could just hole up somewhere all by
myself for a couple of months, I could lose all of the pounds I
want to lose, then go out and face the world. The problem with that
is that then you haven't learned to deal with life. The weight is
just gonna come right back on because you haven't learned to do
things the right way.
Am I making sense? As for facing the challenges you have coming
up next week (I'm telling myself all of this, too, as I will be
travelling all next week) at least start out with the notion that
you are going to do the best you can. Don't set yourself up for
'failure' by telling yourself, well, there's no way I can do this,
so I might as well not even try. Try to plan ahead then (the tough
part) try to keep your plan of action in the forefront of your mind.
Keep consciously thinking about it. And try to stick to it. Be sure
to pat yourself on the back for every little triumph.
Another thing I have discovered - don't let yourself get too hungry.
Personally, once my hunger level reaches a certain point, my will
power (or won't power) decreases DRAMATICALLY. So, if I eat small
amounts throughout the day, especially before going out to eat,
I am much better able to control myself later on.
Good luck.

| Most of us have to deal with the over abundance of food that
seems to crop up everywhere. On Friday nights, I meet with a bunch
of people for a game. Between the Doreto's, potato chips, Pizza,
chinese(SP) food, soda etc,the situation can look rather bleek.
In this case, I have a couple of alternatives, 1. Eat nothing and
feel miserable (I do not do this!) 2. Bring over my micro wave
popper and chopsticks. I pop a small amount of popcorn, then eat
it selectively with chopsticks. Since we generally go till the
wee hours, around midnight I make another small amount. 3. Bring
3 bottles of Perrie (mineral water) 32 oz size, and when others
are drinking beer or eating, I drink the mineral water.
The point about eating something before hand is implicitely
accurate! Do it, and the food around you is much less likely to
jump out and leap into your mouth!
Last note : To help in controlling the "urge" to eat at such
events, relax. If you are uptight, or concerned about this food
waiting to leap down your throat, it will. Also, even if you are
not thirsty at the time, fill up a large glass with mineral water,
or diet soda or some no/low cal beverage. Then when you feel the
urge to snack, the glass of liquid will remind you that it has already
reserved the room in your stomach!
Hope this helps, I know it's hard. And remember, depending
on how YOU ARE modifying your eating habits, that above all else
you are doing this for YOU, and if your "will power" breaks down,
do not chastise (No I can't spell.) yourself, just vow to do better
tomarrow. You are doing this for YOU.
As far as weight loss is concerned, persistence is the key.
I for example have gone 5 days without loosing a pound. This is
not uncommon. It is called plateu's. On the sixth day, I was down
2 lbs.
My apologies for rambling, but I hope this helps,
Paul
