371.0. "WEIGHT CONTROL CLINIC - HAVE YOU TRIED IT?" by CLOSUS::LAPIERRE () Mon Nov 07 1988 13:11
Has anyone ever tried the Weight Control Clinic? (I don't know
if there are any in the east). I tried it and love it. It is not
the diet for everyone...I don't like fruit and most vegetables so
it worked well for me. I've lost 45 lbs since Aug 1st and only
have about 10 to go. My weight loss was not normal. For some reason
this diet agreed with me. They say you will lose around 10 lbs
a month....mine was 15 lbs a month.
If anyone is interested in joining (it's located in Colorado Springs,
corner of Airport & Circle - near the driver's license bureau) here is
a some info about it and how it affected me: (kind of long)
. Low Carbohydrate diet
. All sugars are removed from your diet (this includes:
Fruit
Corn products (including popcorn)
anything food that contains the ingredients with the
letters ose or ol (dextrose, alcohol)
grain products
pasta
vegetables with seeds (pumpkin, squash, etc)
etc.
. fat (suggest you limit your intake for obvious reasons)
. Can eat as much eggs, meat, fish, poultry as you want
. Can eat green leafy vegies
. One serving a day:
. Cheese
. Broccoli
. Carrots,
. Green beans
. plain yogurt, etc
. Can have diet soft drinks, coffee
There are more foods but you get the general idea.
When you schedule your first appointment, you will see a 30 minuite
video about this diet. They also give you a physical and will take
blood samples after 2 weeks and test for 22 different things (liver
& kidney functions, cholesterol, sugar levels, calcium, thyroid,
etc.) They will also prescribe (what they call medications) vitamins
water pills, diet pills, etc. if you want. I take chromium (to
regulate my blood sugar level, potassium, and an appressant (bulking
agent) to help my appetite. I do not like to take drugs so I skipped
the water and diet pills. They will also redo the blood test as you
request.
They also test your ketones weekly to determine the percentage
you are burning fat (don't know if this is scientific or not..but
all I know is if you have high ketones, you lose weight faster) If
you eat sugar between appointments, they can tell by your ketones.
They take your blood pressure weekly as well.
You do not pay anything up front. You pay as you go. If after
2 or 3 visits you don't wish to go...don't...and you will owe nothing.
Overall I feel great. I've lost 33 inches on my body in 3 mos
(so I know it is not just water). The only exercise they suggest at first
is to walk...they believe if you start building up muscle while
reducing it will effect your attitude...if you are more interested
in what the scale says rather than how your clothes fit..you are
better to put off the toning until you feel comfortable with
your weight (kind of like replacing 1 lb of feathers with 1 lb of
steel).
I just received a copy of the maintenance and it will bring all
the foods I've eliminated back into my diet only within reason.
I have to admit, this diet goes against everything I was taught
and I was a true skeptical...but I have never lost weight this quickly
before and felt this good. This diet is very good for women because
of the sugar elimination. The mood swings are almost non-existent.
As far as cholesterol goes, mine was very high when I started.
They suggested I follow the diet and not worry about it. I did
that and even with eating eggs and beef frequently it dropped 20
points in 4 weeks. They are researching the impact of a low carbo
diet on fat...people who eat a low fat diet have a tendency to have
very low HDL levels (the good fat) but people on a low carbo diet
have very high HDL levels which helps lower the cholesterol (don't
know if this is a medical fact...but I know mine went down).
I'm a believer in this, but remember, it's not the right diet for
everyone...I hate fruit so it was easy. All I can say is try it
if you think it is the type of diet you will like.

PS: I tried the sybervision diet and it just wasn't right for me.
I lost some weight, but I just didn't care for the fruit and vegies
and lost interest.
