Virginia,
I have bought one of these tapes. The only problem I have is trying
to find the time to listen to it! I do find, however, that when
I *am* listening regularly, it is much easier to stay motivated.
> A lady I work with has lost 50 lbs. just by
>listening to this type of tape. No dieting what so ever;
I guess it depends on how you define "dieting". To me it means eating
right, avoiding or at least limiting high calorie foods...these
are the things that this type of tape teaches/motivstes you to do.
I think if you are receptive to the suggestions these tapes make,
they are quite likely to work for you. (Or *with* you...you still
have to make the right choices!)
Also, check out note #187 for a few more ideas about these tapes.
Good luck!

| I have a tape called Forever Slim for women. I bought it at Lechmere's
tape section. The voice tells you how to resist and what to keep
telling yourself. I found it really works if you listen to it
faithfully. It's like having a support person with you all the time.
You can listen in the car or with a walkman. It tells you how to
forgive yourself if you overindulge and how to push those negative
thoughts away. I just got lazy and didn't use it. But I am trying
again. Hope it helps you.

Thanks for pointing me to the previous note on this. It proved
very interesting.
re .2
Why don't you try listening to your tape at night while you're in
bed. According to my tape, even when you're sleeping your subconscious
mind is still picking up all the things the tape is telling you.
I assume this would work on any tape of any sort.
BTW, I've noticed my food habits have improved. I'll find myself
thinking I don't need that extra piece of meat or bread, and I need
to drink water instead of diet coke (this tape is suppose to help
get you off of caffeine, too!)

| I just purchased tapes titled "Winning at Losing" and have been
using them for 3 days. I listen to the easy listening music tape
(subliminal messages) at my desk most of the day and at night I
play the ocean tape. I enjoy the tapes, they are very relaxing...
as for being effective it is too soon to tell. I do seem to be
more aware of what food I am selecting to eat.
I want to lose about 60 pounds and am willing to try anything that
is possitive and healthful.
Let me know how you do with your tape.

| re .4
I have had my tape for about 1 week now, and I have noticed I'm
making better food choices than I normally would have. Also, I
find myself actually WANTING water. That is really weird for me
to WANT water. I MAKE myself drink it, but I have never WANTED
it, before. I have found that I can walk by the candy dish on someone
else's desk and NOT have to reach in and get a piece of candy.
My biggest problem is still with exercise. I know I don't exercise
enough, and I know I feel better when I do exercise, but I STILL
can't seem to make myself exercise like I should. Maybe the tape
will help me with this, also.
Good luck to you!!

Which tape do you have? You mention "re .4" which talks about "Winning
at Losing", but there are other tapes mentioned in this topic. I've
looked at the different notes in several topics on these tapes, but
it's not clear whether one is better than the others.

Beverly,
You're not going to believe this, but I don't know the name of the
tape (yes, I'm a big dummy ;-))!! I'll look when I get home tonight
and TRY to REMEMBER to post it Monday. I remember it had Weightloss
in the title (I think). I don't know if any tapes are any better
than the others or not as they all send out the same kind of message.
Some of them may be stronger in suggestion than others, but I'd
basically say your subconscious is picking up the same "power of
suggestion" from any of them you choose.
I'll look and post it Monday.

294.8 | More on subliminals. | BOSACT::YETMAN | In the ACT! | Thu Jun 16 1988 07:58 | 55 |
| RE: Winning at loosing tapes:
I'm not as familiar with the "Winning at Loosing" series as I'd like to
be! I purchased it for my wife awhile back and she hasn't really used them.
I happen to use other series tapes by the same company "Gateways Research
Institute". One thing I can say is if you find time to listen to them, they
work! And for all you people who say I can't find time maybe this will help:
Listening is a very subjective word here. I.E. you really are not required
to listen at all when it comes to any of the subliminal tapes. Just simply
playing them in the backround is enough. Since your working at a subconscious
level your conscious mind doesn't have to give a sh*t about what it is your
hearing. In other words just try to find time to put the tape on and
*IGNORE IT*.
The Gateways series tapes come in 4 flavors all of which are included in
any particular program.
1: Self hypnosis tapes, These are the ones you shouldn't listen too when
driving or operating heavy machinery etc... They use self hypnosis techniques
to relax you and talk you through some common sense ideas about your goals.
Things like guided imagery and positive affirmations along with relaxation.
These are usually 45 minutes or longer and they do require a time commitment
since you shouldn't be doing anything else.
2: Quick break tapes, Same as above without the serious self hypnosis, there
only 10 minutes long and contain some quick relaxation techniques along with
imagery and positive affirmations.
3: Mind talk tapes, These use a combination of verbal messages that express
a particular message as well as being backed up by subliminal messages of the
same content. This way you can feed your conscious and subconscious mind at the
same time. These can be listened to any time but are more effective if you
can pay attention to the message.
4: Subliminal tapes, These are tapes using light upbeat music or surf sounds
to mask subliminal messages. They can be listened to anytime! Remember the
best part is you really don't have to be aware of what's being played, just so
long as it reaches your ears!
I think the key to success with these tapes is some level of consistency.
If you stick to the program you will almost definitely be successful. If your
like me and have little extra time, then stick to the subliminals as your
primary source. This way you can listen and ignore them. I usually put them
on using my walkman so I don't bother anyone, and just go about my business
not concentrating at all about what's on the tape.
I hope this helps some people get a better flavor for what these tapes are
like.

294.9 | " Where to get "Winning at Losing??" | TFH::LAPOINTE | | Thu Jun 16 1988 08:16 | 18 |
| I just bought the "Slim forever for women" (Thanks for letting me
know where to get it) It seams to be working. I don't seem to
have the obsession that I had before for food. I listen to it all
day I have one of those jobs where I'm on my own most of the time
and I don't get bothered to much I've been playing it over and over
again. Where can I get the other, "Winning at Losing", I think
I may get tired of the same one over and over again.
BTW the first time I listen to the b side of the tape, the ocean
sounds and piano music, I was looking at the slides I took when
I went to Nantucket last year and it was great. To see the pictures
of the ocean and the beachs there and to hear the waves crashing!!!
It was ALMOST like being there.
Thanks again

| I have the "SLIM FOREVER FOR WOMEN" tape, and I love it! A friend
suggested it to me when I first started my diet, and it has really
helped me a lot. I got it at Walden's Bookstore (in Spokane, WA)
for about $8.
It is so easy to get discouraged when you're trying to lose weight,
so every little bit of encouragement you can get helps. Every night
for about three months I put it on just before I got into bed and
listened. Visualizing myself "slim and beautiful" has helped me
become just that! Our minds are much more powerful than we know!!
By taking the time to listen, I am sending my subconscious mind
another message: I AM WORTH 30 MINUTES!!!! Often times I fell
asleep, but at least I was thinking about becoming a better me when
I did doze off ZZZzzzzzz.....
I recommend it!!

Note 391.0 Tapes 1 reply

Hi,
I'm new to this file. I found the notes in this file
pretty interesting. One of the things that I have tried
that is pretty successful is subliminal tapes. One side
of the tape has a subliminal message with music and the
ocean as a background. The other side of the tape is
self-hypnotic. I used this kind of aid when I quit
smoking. I gave it up for 7 months, and I only used the
tape for 1 month. Now I am using a subliminal tape for
weightloss. For the first time in my life I am actually
leaving food on my plate. The tape deals with overeating
as a symptom rather than a cause. It's pretty successful.

"Researchers find no evidence subliminal self-help tapes work"
WASHINGTON (AP) - Self-help tapes with soothing sounds and messages for
the subconscious mind have been snapped up by Americans. but researchers
say the recordings have no proven value.
Production and sales of the tapes, promoted to help do everything from
make friends to cure acne, has become a $50 million business in the
United States, according to a report issued yesterday by the National
Research Council, an affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences.
And, yet, said the report, there is no scientific proof that the tapes
do anything to help people reach their goals.
"We conclude that their is neither theoretical foundation nor experimental
evidence to support claims that subliminal self-help audio tapes enhance
human performance," the report said.
Tape recordings of soothing sounds, such as waves or gentle breezes, are
being sold on the basis that embedded behind these sounds, at a level that
cannot be consciously detected, are messages that will lead to self-
improvement.
The theory is that these messages, repeated thousands of times, are stored
in the subconscious and then converted by the conscious mind into changes in
behavior.
There are manufacturers, the committee said, that claim such tapes can
cause people to lose weight, stop smoking, quit drinking, think creatively,
make friends, reduce pain, improve vision, cure acne, conquer fears,
project astrally, and become better bowlers.
"We find such claims unwarranted from both a theoretical and empirical
standpoint," said Robert A. Bjork, chairman of the NRC's study committee
on the issue and a professor at UCLA.
Even when the messages are there, he said, there is no evidence that they
can change complex human behavior, such as building self-esteem.
