280.0. "Getting off to a slow start :-(" by MSDOA1::MCMULLIN () Thu May 12 1988 13:17

Why is it that I'm not dropping weight very fast my first couple
of weeks of dieting? I'm drinking plenty of water, exercising,
and I have only cheated once and that was on Mother's day at a
restaurant, but then I skipped dinner. The scales have not moved
from 152 and it's really beginning to depress me! I want to get
down to 125 by the end of September. I'm afraid if I don't hurry
up and see some results, I'm going to get seriously depressed and
pig out!! Also, I don't think it's the muscle weighs more than
fat syndrome because I've only exercised Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
of this week. I didn't exercise any last week. I need some
suggestions on why this is happening! :-(

Hang in there. Put the scale away. You may have "pigged out" before
you started the diet and it is just catching up with you. You may
be making mistakes and not be realizing it. If you are on WW fill
out your sheet and have your leader look at it. Don't skip meals,
that only slows your metabolism down. If you loose 1 lb. to 1 1/2
lbs a week you'll be rid your weight by September. Don't be hard
on yourself and you will feel much better. Only get on the scale
once a week, twice if you really have to! And most of all THINK
    THIN!

Good luck, I truly know the feeling.

280.3MMO01::MCMULLINFri May 13 1988 08:2645
    RE .1

I've been eating a bowl of cereal (usually Fruit & Fibre, rice
Krispies, etc) and a small glass of oj for breakfast. I am
measuring this out so I don't exceed 200 calories.

For lunch I've been eating lean cuisines, salads, tuna, etc. I'll
occasionally have a sandwich with the thin bread and some type of
meat or chicken we cooked on the bar-b-que grill. I have a piece
of fruit for dessert or I'll save the fruit for a snack later on
    during the day.

For dinner we've been trying to cook some sort of meat on the grill
every night (figure this and broiling is probably the best ways
to cook meat and the broiler makes the house too hot). With that
I add a green veggie (love those green beans) and sometimes a salad.
This leaves me room for an apple or a banana later on.

I drink water all day long. I've exercised ever since Monday night.
Two nights for 20 minutes, 1 night 30 minutes and last night 10
    minutes (I was tired).

I've really been watching it!! Where did I go wrong???

    Re .2

I can't really remember "pigging out" before I started, but we have
a tendency to forgot things like that, don't we? ;-) I'm not on
Weight Watchers, I'm trying to eat between 1000 and 1200 calories
a day. I haven't skipped any meals except dinner on Mothers day
after we went for pizza at lunch, but I only ate 2 thin pieces (2
more than I needed) of pepperonni pizza and a salad at lunch. Today
is Friday, I'll try not to weigh myself until next Thursday or Friday
and see if that does any good. I have been weighing every day because
when I've dieted before the first 2 weeks were when I lost the fastest.
BTW, I go to the Dr. Wednesday, so I'll get weighed then. If I
haven't lost any by then I'll ask the Doc about it!! I forgot next
week is the week I've got to go see him.

Any way, thanks for the support and help. I had a good cry last
night and that made me feel some better.

280.4-Just Hang InVIDEO::VERGEFri May 13 1988 09:5524
The first thing to remember is that if you are cutting down on calories
(and fats) then your body will adjust and will lose weight. Every
person loses at their own rate. I can drop to 800 calories a day
and not lose for a week, but then things catch up. Do not get
discouraged; just keep things constant, and the results will begin
to show. When I started the weight loss clinic, I was on 1000 calories
a day the first week, lost a few pounds, then gained it all and
more back in a few days due to water retention. I had started to
eat canned tuna, shrimp, and few other things that combined to give
me a very high sodium level. This caused me to gain weight by making
me retain fluid. I cut back on the canned stuff, and rinsed the
tuna, etc., with plenty of water before using it, and surprise!
my weight dropped back down to previous unknown numbers.

Watch the lean cusine and other frozen dinners; these are known
to be high in sodium. Also, look at the content of your salad
dressings and barbecue sauces, etc. if you are using them. They
sometimes caontain high sodium and fat levels that can really make
    the difference.

All in all, it sounds like you should just hang in there - the results
will come, and probably with a bang!

If you're using butter on stuff or whole milk with your cereal, switch
to margarine (the real fatty fats aren't as bad) and lowfat or skim
milk (same as butter to margarine).

280.6noMSDOA1::MCMULLINFri May 13 1988 11:217
    re .5

No butter and I've never used anything but skim milk since I got
married. I'm using reduced cal mayo, sugar free jello, etc.

Keep the suggestions coming, you're helping alot!

280.7More SuggestionsAKOV12::PIMENTELFri May 13 1988 12:0524
Sounds like you are eating sensibly but you may be mixing wrong some
times. i.e. too much bread or pasta in one day, too many fruits
etc. Stay away from those prepared dinners, they are full of sodium
as was mentioned earlier. Try these rules if you are not doing
so already, 2 slices bread per day (4 if it is lite bread) or 1/2
cup rice or pasta is equal to one bread and 3oz potato is equal
to one bread. Stay away from peas, corn or winter squash unless
you want 1/2c which is equal to 1 bread. All other veggies are
fine. Limit red meat to 12oz per week (4 meals). Eat fish, turkey,
chicken or veal (not to exceed 3oz lunch or dinner). 2 8oz glasses
of skim milk per day and one 1 tablespoon of fat per day (2 if it
is diet margarine or lite mayo). Don't exceed 1 Tbls of salad oil
a day either. 3 Fruits a day (4oz OJ is one fruit, 1/2 med. banana
    is one fruit).

You might also ask your doctor if perhaps you are retaining fluid
and he could give you a mild fluid pill to take occasionally if
    need be.

    Good luck this weekend.

280.8Look for hidden sugarATSE::KASPERAvoid Colloquial StuffMon May 16 1988 10:589

The one thing that jumped at me was the Rice Krispies. They have added
sugar, which you probably don't want. Try the Kellog's Nutri Grain
    cerals - they're sugar free, and quite good.  There are others, too;
    learn to read labels!

280.9More veggies, less proteinSRFSUP::TERASHITACalifornia NativeMon May 16 1988 14:1014
The thing that I noticed is that you seem to be getting most of
your calories from protein, followed by breads and cereals. Try
eating more vegetables (unadorned by fats) and salads (without
dressing...just lemon or vinegar...or reduced calorie dressings).

I'm back to having at least two servings of vegetables at lunch
and two more at dinner. I feel much more full that way, and I'm
    losing weight again, too.

Good luck...hang in there...I've been there and it's not fun. But
    it does change, eventually.

It sounds to me that you are doing swell to me.. It's good to
take the weight off slow this way you'll keep it off.

I would say keep it up and you will see a lose. Don't get
angry with yourself and start over eating because you will
just get more angry and that isn't good.

I have been having a hard time losing also but now I'am under
Dr's care and am on a strict diet.

Do you go to a weight reducing Program that gives you support ?
There are some nice weight watchers classes.. Try one that you
like. I tryed a few before I found the class I like.

Take a good look at your self and tell yourself that YOU are
important and you will do this. Do it for yourself..and hang in
    there..

Best of Luck and if you get too angry you can count on us we
    are right behind you ..

Thanks for all the good suggestions!! I'm feeling better this week,
and I still haven't weighed myself. I go to the Dr. Thursday and
I've decided to wait until then. My skirt I'm wearing today doesn't
feel quite as tight as it did last week; although, it's still tighter
than it use to be. The suggestion about the veggies twice a day
sounds like a good idea. My sister is eating nothing but vegetables
at lunch and dinner (this is NOT a long term diet) and has lost
about 3 lbs. in a week. I'll try that and see if it will give me
    the incentive to keep going.

I'm not doing too good. 282.10 explains my dilema. I just can't
seem to get it all together. I've really got to buckle down, but
I just can't seem to do it. Maybe when everything gets back to
    normal, I can straighten up.

    Keep losing!!!

280.13Some ideas.EVER11::AITELEvery little breeze....Thu May 19 1988 15:3327
When you go to your doctor, if you STILL have not lost much,
have him check your thyroid functioning. There was a woman
in my Lifesteps class who was down to 8-900 calories per day
and STILL was not losing. After a while, the instructor suggested
she have her thyroid functioning checked, and THAT was the problem.
She got some nifty pills, or something, and started losing.

I second the suggestion to avoid really salty foods. In addition,
make sure you weigh your food, especially the meat. If you can't,
remember that 3 oz of meat is about the size (and thickness!) of
a deck of playing cards - and I mean a regular deck, not the larger
ones made for folks with impaired vision!

Make sure you keep up that exercise. Increase it, as you can,
but make sure you do SOMETHING at least 3 times per week. Otherwise,
dieting tends to slow the metabolism, and you won't lose as fast.
Don't worry about gaining muscle. You just can't gain muscle by
doing things like walking, biking, jumping rope, doing situps and
leg raises, etc. Believe me, it's HARD to gain muscle, and it won't
happen unless you're trying to gain muscle. No excuses there!
    ;-)

Good luck, I know it's a real BEAR when you hit a plateau, especially
if you don't have a loss to look back on. But you'll do it!

I am on a Dr's diet and she has me writing down everything I put
in my mouth.. I also go to Weight Watchers and they say the same.
I had a hard time getting my self to write things down and count
my Calories. But if a person is really serious and really wants
to lose they will do this.
I tryed all the excuses well I can't give this up .. I've tryed
    and it didn't work.. Why didn't it work ? It's because I didn't
allow it to but now that I am doing what I am suppose to and
go to the Dr's once aweek and the Support from Weight Watchers
and also from this File I am losing weight and some weeks I don't
lose as much as others but I am not giving up I want to lose this
weight more then anything and Yes I may have to not take a goodie
now and then but I am feeling better and I will not stop until I
    reach my Goal..

280.15Doctor, DoctorMSDOA1::MCMULLINFri May 20 1988 07:4031
Well, gang, I went to the Dr. yesterday. Louise, I didn't get a
chance to read your note before I went, so I didn't do that! Anyway,
I have lost 1/4 lb. since the last time I was in there (3 months
ago). I asked the nurse what my weight was when I started going
and I have gained 18 lbs. since I first went to this Dr. last Feb.
(this is not a Dr. that I started going to to lose weight). Anyway,
I asked the nurse if they had any diet they recommended. She gave
me a copy of a 1,000 calorie a day diabetic diet and said it was
a good diet for everyone to be on. She told me to follow it for
2 weeks and then if I hadn't lost any weight to call them back.
She didn't say why, but maybe they'll want to do the thyroid test
that Louise mentioned. See, I was eating basically what I wanted
as long as I didn't exceed 1,000 calories a day. Someone mentioned
earlier in this file that maybe I was getting too much carbohydrates,
it could be true. I had an old copy of a 1,000 calorie diet, but
you only had 1 piece of bread a day, and 7 ounces of meat. I felt
like this was outdated, so I tried to cut down on the meat and have
more bread. Maybe that was what was doing it. This new diet the
nurse gave me last night has 4 bread exchanges, 4 meat exchanges,
no fat(diabetic's can't have fat, I take it???). Anyway, I feel
like it is a generally healthier diet and I started by eating for
dinner last night what it said I could have. So, maybe this time
I can stick to it since I feel better about the diet plan.

Thanks for all the support I have received. Good luck to everyone
    this weekend.

280.16Diabetics can have fat21002::PIMENTELFri May 20 1988 10:5212
Yes Virginia, Diabetics can have fat. My mom has a 1200 to 1400
calorie diet that allows her to have 3 fats a day which is equal
to 1 TBLS of margarine, mayo, oil or 2 TBLS or diet margarine, lite
mayo. (You can also break it down and have 1 tsp of margarine and
2 tsp of mayo or oil - mix and match).

Good luck with this diet. Keep us posted.

280.17I'm going to do it!!!!!!!34226::MCMULLINFri May 20 1988 11:5124
I went out and bought a diet scale at lunch to weigh my food on.
That might have been part of my problem, too, because I sure thought
3 oz. was more than a deck of cards. My 3 oz. was probably more
like the oversize deck you mentioned ;-} Anyway, I have a new outlook
on this whole dieting bit and I've made up my mind I am going to
do it. I am not going to cheat this weekend. I love to read, and
I bought a book when I bought my diet scales. It looks like one
of those "I've just got to finish this chapter" type of books.
I've decided if I get hungry after dinner, that I'm going to take
my book and get in bed and read (once I'm in bed, I HATE to get
up). I've got plenty of housework I can do, and we're getting a
new dog this weekend that I'll have to spend time with. (This is
a grown dog and I've already got 3 grown dogs, so I'll have to really
watch them to make sure they're not killing each other). I plan
on staying busy and maybe by Monday or Tuesday, I'll be able to
tell a difference in my weight or my clothes; even a little bit
is better than none or gaining. Thanks again for all the support
everyone has given me. Look me up in the WEEKENDERS and the PROGRESS
    files.

    Keep losing!!!

280.18Think those pounds away...JJM::ASBURYFri May 20 1988 13:4937

    Virginia,

A couple of weeks ago, I went on a special Weight Watcher's diet
called Breaking Through. It was somewhere around 1,000 calories.
So, I just wanted to offer a few words of warning and a few words
    of encouragement.

For the first few days that I was on that diet, I was hungry. Actually,
I was HUNGRY!!! But, this feeling does go away. Keep this in mind,
if you end up feeling like I did. It really does fade a lot after
    the first couple of days.

As far as attitude goes...I, too, had to change my outlook. This
sort of involved a bit of self-hypnosis-type thinking. My vulnerable
times are early morning (when I am still in bed or in the shower)
and late at night (just before I fall asleep). So, during these
times, I started telling myself things like "I'm not going to feel
hungry today." And "I'm going to stick to eating just what I am
allowed today." "One day at a time." Etc.

Sure enough, I have managed to create somewhat of a mind-over-matter
(or mind-over-stomach) kind of situation. I actually do not want
things i shouldn't eat *as often or as badly* as I did before. I
try to reinforce this during the day. If I suddenly decide, as I
am walking past the vending machine at about 3:00 in the afternoon,
that I am really starving, I tell myself "No, you're not. You're
really not hungry. So just forget about it."

I don't know that this will work for everyone. I do know that it
has helped me. (and the weightloss shows it!) I'm sure that you
have to believe that it might work...

In any event, good luck this weekend. Let us know how it goes.

    -Amy.
