| Hi Virginia,
Sit ups are good. A couple of things, though. You have to make sure
you do them right or you can hurt yourself (true of any exercise,
I suppose). One thing my aerobics instructor told us - you can "train"
your stomach muscles to stick out if you are doing sit ups wrong.
(I didn't know this) When you curl up, you want to breathe out AND
*tighten* your stomach muscles at the same time. (pull them in)
At the very end of the sit-up, blow that last little bit of air
out of you, keeping your stomach muscles tight. In other words,
you don't want to be pushing your stomach out while doing sit ups.
Am I making sense? I hope so.
Of course, you also want to keep your knees bent and don't arch
your lower back...
Riding a bike is good for your legs. (so are many other things,
of course.) And, long ago, when I used to ride 10-15 miles a day
(this was my only mode of transportation at the time...) I also
found that it helped to flatten my stomach.
Good luck.
-Amy.

| For info on all sorts of exercises, try UFP::FLEX. This is a notesfile
about bodybuilding and weightlifting, but all sorts of exercise
is discussed. There is little discussion of aerobic dancing, other
than its value as an adjunct to bodybuilding, but all sorts of
abdominal exercises are definitely discussed. Take a look - we'd
love to have some new readers and, who knows, you may discover a
new hobby! I found that "heavy metal" was the best way to tone
certain areas of my body, like the back of my arms (you know, where
you get that old-lady wobble stuff?) and my thighs. The file is
not just for "muscleheads", either. There are lots of people in
it who are interested in working out a few times a week and that's
it, as well as those who are into competition.
