278.0. "exercises for lower stomach??" by MSDOA2::MCMULLIN () Wed May 11 1988 07:42

    What kind of exercises can I do for my lower stomach (under my belly
    button!) My skirts button fine around the waist, but when they're
    zipped, my lower stomach pokes out. I only started exercising Monday
    night and I know I can't expect miracles over night, but I thought
    if there was any special exercises I could be doing, I might as
    well start them now. I did 20 situps the 1st night and 30 last
    night. I did leg lifts, stand up and touch your toes, and stuff
    like that. Also, what about the top part of my legs? Any suggestions
    on that?

    Thanks,

    Virginia

278.1on sit-ups, etc...JJM::ASBURYWed May 11 1988 09:0125
    Hi Virginia,

    Sit ups are good. A couple of things, though. You have to make sure
    you do them right or you can hurt yourself (true of any exercise,
    I suppose). One thing my aerobics instructor told us - you can "train"
    your stomach muscles to stick out if you are doing sit ups wrong.
    (I didn't know this) When you curl up, you want to breathe out AND
    *tighten* your stomach muscles at the same time. (pull them in)
    At the very end of the sit-up, blow that last little bit of air
    out of you, keeping your stomach muscles tight. In other words,
    you don't want to be pushing your stomach out while doing sit ups.
    Am I making sense? I hope so.

    Of course, you also want to keep your knees bent and don't arch
    your lower back...

    Riding a bike is good for your legs. (so are many other things,
    of course.) And, long ago, when I used to ride 10-15 miles a day
    (this was my only mode of transportation at the time...) I also
    found that it helped to flatten my stomach.

    Good luck.

    -Amy.

    	You didn't know this because it's a myth, just like spot reducing.

    	There are safe ways to do situps and dangerous ways to do them.
    The difference is in where the tension is concentrated and how much
    pressure is transferred to the lower back.

    	See 10.35 for the safe situp as recommended by AFAA and IDEA.

278.3For exercise, try UFP::FLEXEVER11::AITELEvery little breeze....Thu May 19 1988 15:2015
    For info on all sorts of exercises, try UFP::FLEX. This is a notesfile
    about bodybuilding and weightlifting, but all sorts of exercise
    is discussed. There is little discussion of aerobic dancing, other
    than its value as an adjunct to bodybuilding, but all sorts of
    abdominal exercises are definitely discussed. Take a look - we'd
    love to have some new readers and, who knows, you may discover a
    new hobby! I found that "heavy metal" was the best way to tone
    certain areas of my body, like the back of my arms (you know, where
    you get that old-lady wobble stuff?) and my thighs. The file is
    not just for "muscleheads", either. There are lots of people in
    it who are interested in working out a few times a week and that's
    it, as well as those who are into competition.
