How do you cope with situations where fattening foods that you really like sit there in front of you for some time, and the circumstances are such that you can't easily move away from the food. This problem came up on me unawares the other day, when I went to a friend's for a sit down dinner. I managed very well during the main course, asking for just a small slice of meat, and eating plenty of vegetables (except for the potatoes which had been roasted in fat - yummy!), and I stuck to my mineral water while everyone else drank wine. This was fine, and made easier, because I had rehearsed it in my head before I went. However, then my host brought out the CHEESE! Alright for the first 20 minutes; I took a small sliver of the cheese I judged the least fattening, and ate it slowly with one biscuit. But we ended up sitting round the table for another 2 hours, while people nibbled at the cheese.... I weakened, and ended up trying each variety! I have not contemplated estimating the extra calories I had. I know it was hundreds! I have reanacted this occasion in my mind a few times since, but this time I make the sliver of cheese I cut last for ever. I hope this will make it easier the next time I'm in a similar situation. Does anyone else have a similar problem? How do YOU cope with it? Ali

Ali, I don't wish to sabatage your will power, but my opinion is DON"T WORRY ABOUT IT. How often do you find yourself in that situation? Once a month, twice a year? From what you described I would say you did very well before the cheese tray. The 'hundreds' of calories you take in a single event will (worst case) set you back a day. When viewed in the context of a lifetime of modified eating behavior, what's one day. Don't waste your time feeling guilty or worrying about how to handle it. If you expect to have to deal with this type situation frequently, then obviously my response is inadequate, if not forget it. If you must feel guilty, then walk a mile for every 100 calories you over-ate. It won't make you skinny, but your mind will be pacified and your body will be better for it (but maybe not your feet). It seems like I have to deal with an over abundance of food more often than my diet can handle. I think I am going to avoid the situtations and decline invitations. I relate it to being an alcoholic....and a compulsive eater is very much like an alcoholic and in either situation it is not wise to put yourself around temptation. It may be after awhile I will learn how to handle it but in the meantime my health is to important. |
