| Ann,
I have two strategies for dealing with gatherings and food, depending
on whether or not I can bring a dish:
1. If I can't bring something (i.e., if it's catered), I eat food
on my program before I go. Then, while I'm at the party, I
drink soda water.
2. If it's a pot luck, I bring something that's on my program -
preferably something that's OK in unlimited amounts (like a
vegatable tray with yogurt dip). But I don't tell anyone that
my dish is on my program. Usually, if you don't tell people
that it's "diet food", they'll never know.
Good luck and good, healthy, eating!

262.2 | Celebrate the occasion and the people, not the COOK! | SQM::AITEL | Every little breeze.... | Wed Apr 20 1988 15:05 | 24 |
| Lynn has some good ideas here. I have brought veggies with
a tofu based dip to gatherings, and people really like it.
If the gathering is catered, you can usually find out what
the menu is beforehand. If they're surving turkey/ham/roast
beef (some weddings have this) you can eat and stay on program.
Otherwise, you can either eat beforehand, or bring food. It's
a little eyebrow-raising, but you can always fall back on
"health reasons" and "doctor's orders" (right Ann?) as
an iron-clad excuse.
Think a minute: what's the reason for gatherings? Is it to
go and stuff your face on rich food, ignoring the people?
Or is it to celebrate some occasion, talk to loved ones,
enjoy the day? How many times do you see people going to
celebrations and not paying any attention to the celebration?
They just sit there and drink or chew. Wouldn't it be better
to spend more time enjoying the people? And if you don't enjoy
them, DON'T GO!!! It's far less wear and tear on both body
and mind to send a gift (if desired) and a "sorry, but...",
than to go and feel uncomfortable.

262.4 | double-whammy! | JJM::ASBURY | | Wed May 25 1988 07:34 | 18 |
| Well, this weekend I have both a Wedding and a cookout to go to.
The only person I will know at the wedding will be the guy I am
dating. His sister is the one getting married. I will be meeting
his family for the first time that day as well. I figure that I'll
probably be too nervous to eat much. Or else I'll just eat carefully.
And I plan to eat before I leave home, so I won't be starving when
I get to the reception.
The cookout will be at my mother's house. She's usually pretty good
about having foods around that I can eat. And lately, my whole family
has had a lot of good things to say about the change in how I
look...this gives me added will power (or won't-power!).
So, all in all, I think this weekend won't be too bad for my diet...and
it should be a lot of fun!

262.5 | try this ... | COPA::CABANYA | | Wed May 25 1988 09:36 | 21 |
| Hi Ann, I have a few suggestions for you regarding 'outings'. First
of all, if there are things there that you'd like to try take a
SMALL portion (ie, 1-2 bites) of whatever it is 'just to taste'.
That way you won't feel deprived. The WORST thing you can do when
you diet is to do the 'never again can I have' routine. This will
only make you unhappy in the long run and will probably end up in
a binge somewhere along the line.
If you one of those people that have a had time only having a small
portion of something (who can eat only one potato chip?) then I
would like to suggest you pick up a copy of the Rotation Diet.
At least a third of this book is dedicated to helping you overcome
your 'binge foods'. He has several exercies and visulation techniques
that I believe WILL help you. It like alot of things that require
patientce and PRACTICE - and it won't happen over night!
Good luck, let us know if you try those exercies and what happens.
