194.1 | I'm sweeter than candy! | TFH::LAPOINTE | | Fri Jan 15 1988 08:09 | 19 |
|
I'm planning an evening for two....
Romantic music
Candles on the table
Warm fire
Fresh flowers
Gourmet meal
and ME!!!!
I can't think of a better way for him or for me to spend the evening
together. And the memory will be much sweeter than any box of candy
could ever be.
I can't wait

| My wife heard a Valentine's story at WW around this time last year
about a not so sweet heart; I've been waiting for someone to start
this note so I could post it.
A woman in the class had a husband who always bought her a 20 --
yes, that's right, 20 -- pound box of chocolate every year.
Then came the year that this woman decided to join Weight Watchers. Her
husband was not very supportive of her efforts, perhaps out of jealousy
(heaven forbid my wife get thin and other men look at her), perhaps
because he didn't want to face the fact that he had a little to lose
too. The woman begged her husband, "Please, this year, no
chocolates.".
And do you know what?
Her husband got her NOTHING!
The WW leader's advice? "Lose the weight, then dump him!"
And do you know what? She did!
On to more pleasant stories...for the last couple of years, in lieu
of a large box of chocolates, I have sent my wife flowers at work
(she teaches elementary music in Beverly). Alison reports that
there have been a lot of envious people in the teachers' room on
February 14th...

Some of us "kids at heart" still like stuffed animals! :^)
Paul...your reference to the woman who's husband bought her
20 pound box of chocolate each year reminds me of my ex -
husband. Not that he bought me candy, never did, but he
didn't want me to lose weight either. He liked me the way
I was. And he was skinny. But jealous! Who needs people
like that??!

Flowers are great, unless she's allergic to them. I personally like
getting the arrangements that come in a mug, since that way when the
flowers are gone you have something pretty and useful to bring back the
memory of the flowers!
My husband once brought a big bunch of roses to a party on Valentine's
Day, and went around giving one to each of the ladies. A lot of them
were blown away; some even burst into tears! You'd be amazed at how
many men *never* give flowers, and how many women would love some!
Prudes should hit KP3!
For you ladies who've lost a bit of weight lately and want to give
him something special -- why not indulge in some of those "naughty"
undergarments that you never used to want to think about?! Bet he'll
appreciate it!

194.5 | I vote for jewelry | RSTS32::VERGE | | Sun Jan 17 1988 18:20 | 28 |
| Well, I vote for jewelry - it's always a big hit with me. A pair
of earring, a pendant, a neckchain - and doesn't have to be real
expensive, either, although that's always nice, too, if the giver
can afford it.
Also flowers, clothes, wallet, purse, gift certificates are also
good ideas. Or sometime just spending some special time together
is like a gift. Time to slow down and relax, and talk.
Tickets for a show (Dinner if you want, but you CAN eat at home).
Tickets for movie (Beware of the popcorn)
Go to a museum exhibit
Go to a concert.
See, if we think about it, we can up with all sorts of ideas.
Besides, candy wasn't my favorite, anyway! (Just give me a
plate of pasta, any pasta, now, please . . . . Oh, sorry,
just lost control for a moment!!!)
A good book!
A new craft kit!
Hope these ideas help someone.

I wouldn't exactly call the following one of my "favorite" valentines,
but I'll enter it below anyway. I got this anonymously in high school,
but it was shortly after I had broken up with a girl, so I'm almost
positive who the "unknown" author was... :-)
You moan, you groan, you criticize,
You claim that nothing's right,
You disagree with everyone
And always want to fight.
You fuss, you pout, you whine, you gripe,
You scram and holler too.
You think the world's just one big mess
But guess what -- SO ARE YOU!
Happy Valentine's Day!

| What is Valentine's Day anyway...
Flowers are great...even to sent to the men in your life...
Teddy Bears are wonderful...
A book is fantastic...
Also some un-necessaries are great too...
What is an un-necessary...??? A magnet with a saying..., a pencil
with a heart eraser...it doesn't have to be big/expensive...just
thoughtful...

| Bake some healthy food for them!
Here's a recipe for Chunky Apple Spice Muffins:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup oat bran (or another cup of whole wheat flour)
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp allspice
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp powdered ginger
1 tsp arrowroot
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup applesauce
2 tart apples, peeled, cut in small dice
1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp vanilla
Mix dry ingredients and wet ingredients separately. Combine them
and mix thoroughly. Spoon into non-stick muffin tins. Bake at
400 degrees for about 25 minutes.
You can eat the right things, lose weight and be healthy!

| I don't remember the last time I got candy for Valentine's Day! I also
prefer flowers and/or jewelry and Bill has been wonderfully obliging in the
past. February is amethyst season and I love purple. :-)
...even if I *am* allergic to the flowers :-)
...besides, you can get candy any time of year, and getting it one piece at
a time makes you appreciate it more! :-)

| I thought of a great idea for valentines day....
Take some of your/their favorite weight watcher recipes and handwrite
them in a cloth book...put little sayings in the book also...sort
of a inspirational album....of course only the best of friends would
do this because someone else might take it the wrong way....

| Well, last year I asked for, and received, a GOOD diet scale!
It probably cost more than the candy would, and I've used it
more also. It weighs, to 1/2 ounce precision, up to 5 lbs, so
I can use it to weigh a trimmed roast to estimate roasting time,
or to weigh one ounce of cheese (sigh! so SMALL a piece?)
How's that for turning the tables on candy!
Gold is always acceptable...as are flowers, especially roses.
A silky nightie...or perhaps a flashy new danskin?
And cards, the sillier the better!
Guys, what would you like?

194.13 | Spending Time with Your Loved One | SRFSUP::TERASHITA | California Girl | Thu Jan 21 1988 15:14 | 23 |
| This will be my sixth Valentine's Day with my husband. As our "first
date" was on the eve of Valentine's Day, it is very special to us.
Over the past six years he has given me: A gold "floating heart"
necklace with a diamond chip, stuffed animals, a heart-shaped box
of candy (calm down, it only had four small chocolates in it - he's
VERY supportive of my weight-loss program), and pearl earrings.
I have given him stuffed animals and "naughties" from Frederick's
of Hollywood (to fit ME!).
If we can get the time off, we spend the day at Disneyland. If
we have to work, we usually spend the evening at home in front of
a fire in the fireplace, nibbling delicacies from the Italian Deli
and sipping champagne. Occasionally we go out to a swanky Continental
restaurant for a guilt-free treat.
Whatever we do, we remember first and foremost that our celebration
is that of being together and having found each other. Everything
else is secondary.

| Every Valentine's Day, I try to remember those people who wouldn't
necessarily received Valentines from their Sweethearts.
I always send flowers and a card to my Grandmother, who has been
widowed twice and lives alone.
I visit and take flowers and a card to my 95-year-old aunt who lives
in a nursing home. She and my uncle were married 26 years ago on
Valentine's Day. She has been a widow for 11 years.
I have exchanged Valentines with my father ever since he and my
mother were divorced - 23 years ago.
So, there are many ways to celebrate Valentine's Day. And many
people enjoy being remembered, no matter what the occasion.
Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

194.18 | My hubby is thoughtful | COOKIE::WILCOX | Database Systems/West | Fri Jan 20 1989 12:32 | 12 |
| I'm not certain what I will give, but last year for Valentine's day
my husband had one of those huge helium balloons that looks like a
hot-air balloon sent to me at work. When I went to the lobby to
pick it up I saw that it had a bottle of champaign in the basket.
Hmmmmmm, thought I, why did he send that, he knows I dont' drink.
Well, when I asked him about it he said, "The only other choice
was a box of chocolate." I felt that was extremely thoughtful. He
knew I wouldn't drink the champaign but that the chocolate would
probably send me out of control.
