144.0. "What Motivates You?" by VAXWRK::CONNOR (I see the bad moon arising) Wed Oct 28 1987 11:35

	Motivation. during the summer, I didn't have much motivation,
	so I didn't watch what I was consuming and as a result, I
	gained arount 20 lbs. No sweat I thought after Labor day I'll
	lose it. We guess what - I haven't. There seemed to be at least
	1 or 2 days in a week I binged. Not really serious. One time
	I was craving Dunken Donuts so I bought 6 six of figuring
	I may either get sick or get sick of them and would never
	ever want donuts etc again. Forget it. Last week my wife
	baked simple cinnamon cookies. I must have eaten about 20
	of them.
		Then at the end of the week I got an inspiration.
	I am going to get myself a present for the holidays -
	the reduction in weight and new clothes. It seems to
	be what I needed. Be interesting in may be motivating
	you folks out there (There are mine fields out there,
	especially Thanksgiving.

    Hello,

    What motivates me? EGO!!I can't stand to look in the mirror and
    see too much fat. It will throw me right into a depression and
    then I do someting about it. Since eating can be fun especially
    pastries (My downfall), I consciously make a game out of it and
    give myself mini-rewards for being good. I also take ti just one
    day at a time. Rewards? Guilt-free praise, a piece of clothes
    at the end of a given time, buy a book. The key is to do it one
    day at a time and if you blow a day forgive yourself and start fresh
    the next day.

    Good Luck
    Mary

144.2Old age creeping up ...SHIRE::BIZEThu Oct 29 1987 00:1128
    I don't know where I first got the motivation. For years and years,
    I was telling myself I should definitively do something about my
    weight, but never did, or got discouraged after losing 5-10 pounds.
    I was mostly trying on fad diets.

    I have started my 10th week on WW and it's the longest I have ever
    been on any diet. I have lost +20 pounds even though I binged a
    few times (about once every two weeks I get a fatal craving and
    eat anything in sight!

    What keeps me motivated now is:

    - I look much better than I did;

    - My 32nd birthday is coming up 2 weeks from now and I have fixed
      myself a goal of "under" 133,3 pounds - that may seem a funny
      goal to you, but it translates to 60 kilos, which is both a round
      number and what I weighed before being pregnant... 8 years ago.
      It's still too fat obviously but to me weighing less than I did
      8 years ago really represents something.

    How will I keep motivated when I have lost all the weight I need
    to? That's really a big question. My hope is that I will feel so
    good about myself, that I'll just stay at a reasonable weight out
    of pride!

144.3 A PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS!SNOWAY::SNOWThu Oct 29 1987 06:3223
    I kept putting off losing weight until we got our vacation pictures
    back from our camping trip to Maine this summer. There I was, standing
    on the beach in my bathing suit and a t-shirt....."gawwwwwwwwd,"
    I said, "is that meeeeeeeeee?" "Who let me out in public looking
    like that????" I have pinned that picture in a place where I see it
    every morning when I am getting dressed. It surely motivates me to hop
    on my exercycle. During the day I drink lots of water.

    What keeps me motivated are people...my family (especially our boys
    ages 11 and 14...it's nice to know they really care that I am taking
    care of myself)...the folks I work with are very supportive, too.
    I have told the people I am closest to and spend most of my time
    with that I am on a weight loss program. People are starting to
    notice the weight I have lost, and the compliments on how good I
    look are the best form of motivation I could get!! I just take
    it one day at a time...cause if I don't, I expect too much too soon.

144.4Well, you see, honey...PLANET::WATKINSDon't mind me-low brain cell countThu Oct 29 1987 11:1616
    I have (to my dismay) gained so much weight in such little time
    I think I should be thrown in jail! I have fooled around on diets
    here and there, but I guess the seriousness of my problem hadn't
    quite sunk in. On top of that, having always been thin up to now,
    I didn't even know *how* to diet. I asked my SO what I wouldn't
    like if I could read his mind, referring to a comment he'd jokingly
    made earlier that evening, and wouldn't you guess what he said!
    I knew what he was going to say, yet I wanted to hear it. I forced
    it out of him, and boy, was I mad.

    That was only a week ago, but I'll let you know what happens.
    I think it may have been the best thing he could have done to motivate
    me.

144.5Mirror, Mirror on the Wall....OASS::HEARNSHenryFri Oct 30 1987 07:3720
                    <I'm Dancing As Fast AS I CAN>

    What motivates me? I tell you what motivates me. I started attending
    Modern and Jazz Dance classes 3 years ago. I was a 6:1 and 250lbs
    blob. How I ever got the nerve to go into the studio with all those
    perfect body dancers I will never know. I looked into the mirror
    one time and saw all kinds of un-identified objects hanging off
    my body. I never looked again. Now after changing the way I eat
    and I really never say diet I am 6:1 and 185lbs. I look in the mirror
    all the time now to see what part of my body I need to work on.
    I fiqure I have about 10 more pounds to lose before I arrive at
    my perfect desired weight. I am still motivated every time I look
    in that mirror to keep working on my body and my weight.

    Hang in there itis worth it.

144.6Good Health Motivates MeSRFSUP::TERASHITACalifornia GirlTue Jan 19 1988 12:078
    The way I feel when I don't eat right motivates me. And I mean
    the way I physically feel. My body tells me that I've done wrong
    by being sluggish and feeling just plain yuck!

    P.S. - New clothes in ever-smaller sizes are a bonus!
