| I know what you mean about those days when "Murphy Strikes"...
Three days after I started Weight Watchers, my car was the victim
of a hit-and-run accident! If my wife hadn't been around the house
to stop me, I would have eaten everything then for sure!
A couple of suggestions that I can think of offhand:
1. Find something else to do, possibly outside of your house,
to get your mind off things for a little while. Perhaps a walk,
perhaps a movie, perhaps a shopping trip -- something where
you're just able to forget about everything for a while.
When you come back to reality an hour or two later with a clearer
head, things may not seem as bad.
2. Try not to have "goodies" around the house. I'll never forget
the time last year, while my wife was on WW, that we bought
a half-gallon of the Hood low-cal Cookies and Cream ice milk.
We figured we'd just have a small helping at a time like good
bunnies. HA! That half gallon was history in less than two
days. I find that for my wife and I, the best defense against
nibbling on goodies around the house is to not have them around
the house.
Hope this helps.

141.2 | Get Help! | VAXWRK::CONNOR | I see the bad moon arising | Wed Oct 28 1987 11:19 | 14 |
| One possible start is to join WW, Diet Workshop etc
were you can get SUPPORT that you seem to need. If
you are having many bouts of binge, you may be
clinical depressed since bibing is a possible
symptom. You may need professional counselling
and a physical to determine any possible
medical. If things are really as difficult as it
appears, dont wait too long. You can contact the
EAP at you DEC facility who can guide you and
if necessary refer you to a professional
counselor. Good luck to you.

I do beleive that there is a WW where I work at. (boxboro)
I have been thinking of joining that group soon. I definately fit
into the category of "binging_untill_its_all_gone", and just get
totally out of control at times for reasons unknown. Maybe
WW, Diet Workshop is what I need. What are the average costs for
these memberships and how long is a membership for.?

141.6 | EAP = Employee Assistance Program | VAXWRK::CONNOR | I see the bad moon arising | Thu Oct 29 1987 11:01 | 14 |
| EAP means employee assistance program staffed by prof
counselors. Usually there is an office in each facility
but I dont see one for Boxboro. The nearest one I can
see in the phone book (Listed under the long name)
is Maynard at DTN 223-4439, PKO3-1/K44.
I dont really know the exact cost for WW or
Diet Work shop. I believe that later is considerably
more that WW. The WW at DEC is usually a set price
for a set (Believe it is 10) of meetings meeting
from 12-1 so it is work convient. I think you get
a price break taking it a DEC. Been hearing a lot
of positive feed back about DEC WW.
Good luck again.

141.7 | First on the list: Make a list! | ARNOLD::WIEGMANN | | Fri Oct 30 1987 09:54 | 15 |
| When ever I realize I'm in the midst of one of those blue funks,
I start making a "do list". The feeling usually is caused by thinking
that I'm not accomplishing anything and have been wasting my time,
so I make a list of the things that need done - not a 5-year plan,
by any means! More like new windshield wipers, take shoes to have
heels fixed, get those prints made from slides, call my great-aunt
to see how she's doing - you know, all the nagging piddly b.s. that
I should be taking care of instead of plopping down in front of
the TV! I also plan chores in accordance with what's on TV - I
can fold sheets to Entertainment Tonight & PM Magazine. The great
thing about lists is the crossing off - regardless of how trivial
or routine an item might be, it does help keep you on track, and
at the end of what would otherwise have been one of thoses wasted
days, I *know* that I did indeed accomplish something!

I know that going to the Fridge does not take away the your
feelings.. The food might taste good at first but you can't
eat your problems away.
I think you should see why you are depressed and deal with
it but not with food.. That will only make you more depressed
when you gain weight and then you would eat more..
Why not go to Over eatters? That's what they do is to teach you
how to handle those times when you are down.
Like someone told me What has being FAT down for you ?
Has it made you happy? Has it got you the job you would like?
Has it made you get the husband or wife you would want?
I would say to you when you are upset or down don't be around
food . Go see a friend or call someone or take a walk or
go for a ride..
If you want to write to me I will be glad to hear from you
Take care of number 1 that means take care of you!

141.9 | I'm trying | BOXTOP::BOONE | | Tue Nov 03 1987 05:38 | 21 |
| Yes Ann, you are right, running to the fridge everytime
there is a problem doesn't help me, you or anybody else.
I have checked to see if there is a WW available at my
location, and there is. The only thing is that the current
session has been started for 5 weeks, and I cannot join
until the next session starts (December 15th or so), so
until then, I'm going to try to control myself.
The terrible thing is that I have never learned HOW to
right. Somedays I won't eat anything, other days, I will
eat everything insight.(Mostly sweets). I've crash dieted
3 or 4 times, and taken diet pills etc... and have lost
pounds, but always gain them back plus some, because I
never LEARNED HOW TO EAT. That is what I'm hoping WW will
teach and expound on. I'm not too familiar with Overeaters
Anonymous. Is that more or less the same thing?

141.10 | Count Me In | BOXTOP::BOONE | | Tue Nov 10 1987 07:46 | 32 |
| Well...first off thanks to everyone who responded to this
topic.
Through your support, I think that I have finally landed
on the band wagon. I'm still not *perfect* yet, but I've
finally established a helpful group of eating habits that
I can "live with. While at work, I discovered that I'm really
not as hungry as I think I am sometimes, so I've been having
a salad and diet pepsi for lunch. Sometimes I have a tuna
fish sandwich on pita bread and that is just as good. Even
though I do drink a diet pop atleast once a day, I have been
drinking lots of water whenever I get home from work, instead
of eating everything in the fridge and deciding that I really
didn't want any of it anyway. After a "regular" dinner, if
I have time I try to exercise with a taped show that comes
on early in the morning. (I use my vcr).
Haven't cut out sweets alltogether, but I do have them in
moderation now instead of all day every day. Also, I feel
better about myself and clothes are starting to loosen up
allready.
So... just through the support of this notesfile I have been
able to change my eating habits and get back on the right
track. Will keep you posted on my progress.
Thanks again to everybody and pat yourself on the back
for good advice well taken!!!!

141.11 | Have you ruled out Allergy? | RSTS32::KASPER | Beverly T Kasper | Wed Nov 11 1987 14:40 | 14 |
| Hope your new-found coping ability sticks!
I mentioned in an earlier note re: migraine the book "Dr. (Marshall)
Mandell's 5-Day Allergy Relief System." You might want to take a
look at it. I was in analysis for about 2 years because of depression,
which is much better since I found out I was allergic to wheat. I
used to have a deep-down panicky feeling all the time. I can get
it back anytime; all it takes is a piece of bread!
The problem may not be allergy related, but . . .
Good Luck!
