103.0. "Flavoring, extracts and spices!" by SSDEVO::HILLIGRASS () Mon Aug 24 1987 15:51
I have learned of the wonderful world of flavorings and extracts
and I wanted to share some ideas with everyone.
My fave is artificial butter flavoring. Add it to eggs, vegetables,
and other recipes and with a little salt I swear my spinach tastes
like it is slathered with butter.
Another bunch of good extracts is chocolate, vanilla (of course),
cherry, and coconut. Buy a diet pop, 7-up or whatever add a couple
of different extracts and it is a real treat. I think I put a couple
drops of cherry and coconut and it tasted great...sometimes I
experiment and forget what I put in.
Artificial flavorings include banana, lemon, walnut, maple, almond,
etc....I could go on forever. I never realized the tricks you can
play on your taste buds until I looked in the flavoring section.
I actually found a recipe for Strawberry Cheesecake using Tofu,
eggs, and several flavorings. It tastes heavenly w/practically no
calories and it is goooood for you. (tons of protein)
Actually since I have been going to the Diet Center I have learned
alot about the importance of seasoning in general. You can really
spice up some pretty boring food, make it good and still low cal.
One of my favorite spices is by the American Heart Association,
it is lemon herb seasoning and is great on baked chicked and
fish. (no salt, just good herbs) I buy it in the grocery store.
33 more pounds to go!

| Has anyone else tried Mrs. Dash in vegetable soup? Or on a poached
egg? What a flavor boost! (And NO salt.)

103.3 | Tuna and Mrs. Dash | ARGUS::CORWIN | I don't care if I AM a lemming | Mon Feb 08 1988 12:26 | 12 |
| I've put Mrs. Dash on my (cooked) spinach, broccoli, string beans...I just
wish it had a little less pepper in it.
What I really liked was mixing it into my tuna salad. I also used scallions,
onions, and Hellman's reduced calorie mayo. I stuffed it into celery
stalks (rather than having a sandwich), topped with a tiny bit of shredded
cheese, and microwaved just to heat it a little bit and melt the cheese. It
was really good. For some reason I don't like canned tuna without masking
the flavor somewhat. I used to just eat it plain years ago.

103.4 | cut your salt intake | SALEM::ALLEN_D | | Thu Dec 21 1989 16:17 | 9 |
| If your interested in spices that are salt free than try the ones
that are your favorite.I put an address in note file 4.23 she has
all kinda stuff such as salt free spices,and you can't tell the
difference.and they are good to keep your salt intake down.Just
ask if she has it in the salt free kind and if she does she will
send it to you,or order it from the wherehouse and let you know
how long it will be.Most of the time we ordered it took two weeks
or so on the average,if she didn't have it on hand.
