87.0. "Establishing a permanent goal weight" by STAR::YANKOWSKAS () Fri Jul 17 1987 07:36

With just under 15 pounds to go before I hit my WW "temporary goal"
weight, I'm hoping that I'll need to start thinking about a "permanent
goal" weight in the next couple months. (I'm 5'8"; my temporary goal is
170.) Does anybody have any guidelines or advice on choosing an
appropriate permanent goal weight that might be helpful?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Hi Paul,

Congrats on your weight loss so far! When I started Weight Watchers, I had
about 25 pounds to lose, so the instructor set my temporary goal as the high
end of the weight range for a medium-frame, based on my height. Did your
instructor do this for you? If the member has more to lose, there's an
intermediate goal that is chosen first, I would guess around 25-30 pounds
from the initial weight. If this is your case, your next goal (be it temporary
or permanent) may be pre-determined.

Once you reach the high end of the chart, you have to decide how you feel about
your weight. You can choose this as your perm. goal and stay there, or choose
it as your perm. goal and make your "personal goal" lower. I purposely made
my perm. goal 10 pounds lower, since I knew I could do it, I would look and feel
better there, and I needed the extra incentive to make it official. When I
reached that, I made my own "personal goal" 5 pounds lower, for a variety of
reasons. And, probably since it wasn't an official goal, I'm still working
on it 6 months later! Basically, when you get to the point where you have to
decide, you think about how you feel at that point (you probably can't decide
yet) and if you want to stay there or lose more. It's a very personal
decision, I think.

An interesting thing I just discovered, was that I am really either at the
very low end of having a medium frame, or the high end of a small frame, so
I'm glad I went lower. I should check the charts again for small-frame
ranges.

    Thanks for the reply Jill!

To answer the question in your first paragraph, yes, my temporary
goal is the upper limit of the range for my height and frame.
