in MRO1, in the Capacitor conference room. There is an 11:30am group and a
12:15pm group, each of which meets for 45 minutes. Our lecturer has been
Mary Pilat, and I think she's wonderful.

it's taken them too long to get started here in MKO, so I decided
to do something on my own instead. Our lecturer's name is Norman

Weight Watchers at work just started a week ago at AKO1-3 in Acton
on Wednesdays at noon in the cafeteria. Like Kristy, I couldn't
wait so joined at the Elks in Leominster 2 weeks earlier. The

I attend the WW meeting Mondays at Noon at the Westford Facility.
The group is large and supportive. The leader is Kurt, who
lost 40 lbs. (His wife is also a Weight Watcher.)
I heard a rumor of a Tuesday noon meeting somewhere in the
Parker Street complex, led by Susan Bein, who's lost over 100 lbs.
(She used to lead a group at King Street in Littleton, which was
combined with the Westford group.)
I like and admire both of these leaders.
Weight Watchers has an 800 number that you can call to find meetings
and help--all Weight Watchers employees have been through the program.
Keep on losing!

session starting June 10.
The meeting time will be 12:00-1:00, and it will be in the Capacitor
conference room in MRO1.
Call MRO1 Health Services at dtn 297-6219 to sign up. The cost for the 10 weeks
is $65.00. You don't have to pay until the first meeting.
Please sign up as soon as you can if you're interested so they can be sure
they'll have enough people to run the session.
My vested interest is that I am a member of the group, and don't want us to be
without it for the whole summer!

Employee Activities or personnel. The latest issue of their newspaper
gives the toll free number 1-800-556-7416 to call if you want an at-work

I think all they have to do collect names to determine if there's enough
interest, and book a conference room. WW supplies the lecturer and collects
the money.
Speaking of the latest issue of their newspaper (Eastern MA and Rhode Island

| The next session of the Marlboro Weight Watchers At Work program will begin
September 23. It will meet Wednesdays from 12 noon-1pm in the Capacitor
conference room at MRO1-1/M10. The cost is $61 for 10 weeks, and the
lecturer will be Eileen Fitzpatrick.
We just had our last meeting of the previous session this past Wednesday.
The new session was supposed to start earlier (Sept. 9), but they pushed
it forward because of DECWORLD.
re .18 (Eileen)
Welcome to Marlboro, but I guess your timing isn't that great. There's no
problem switching over to MRO; our previous lecturer suggested many times that
we go to another facility's meeting if we couldn't make our own.
Since we won't be starting up for over a month (how will we survive??), you'll
have to find somewhere else to go until then. Can you drive over to Maynard
or Westboro (assuming they're still "in session") for meetings? Or, you can
attend regular Weight Watchers meetings at night (you're pre-paid) as long as
you bring "proof". Ask your lecturer for details.
The number of employees in our group varies a lot! It's been pretty quiet
over the summer; we had 2 meetings each Weds. up until this past session.
I'd say we've had under 10 people attending most of the time this summer; I
don't know how many were originally signed up. The lecturer, Eileen (:-)),
is good. She's very enthusiastic, and we all need enthusiasm!!
See you in September...

| A new LIFESTEPS program is going to start in September in ZK. Health
Services has more info on it. A brief description: LIFESTEPS is
sponsored by the NE Dairy Council and is run by a trained
nutritionist. Classes are once per week, for 1 hour, at lunch.
The program runs 15 weeks. It is very organized. Each class covers
a topic - examples are Determining Portion Sizes, Dealing with
Sabatours, Figuring out what your eating habits are, Exercise etc.
There is no fixed "diet" - rather, the nutritionist coaches you
into building your own diet from foods *you* enjoy, while teaching
you to eat ANY food in limited amounts. She teaches you how to
count calories for various foods, how to eat out, how to cook
your favorite foods so that they have less calories in them,
etc. You have 2 (3?) individual counciling sessions with the
nutritionist. By the end of the 15 weeks you should have a good
handle on how to control your weight and how to handle any eating
situation.
I lost 25 lbs during the 15 weeks, and have lost 20 more since.
It worked for me!

I believe WW is having some sort of promotion --- something about
$10 for the first meeting instead of the usual $17. There was a
sign about it at the Milford (NH) meeting, but, being a regular
member, I didn't pay close attention.
|
18.28 | my theory | REGAL::ACKERMAN | | Tue Sep 22 1987 14:12 | 16 |
| WW is having a special in Southern NH. It's only $10 the first
week, instead of $17. Also, you'll notice more people join when
the season or the weather change. For example, when summer starts
everybody decides they'd better loose weight so they can look good
in summer clothing. When summer ends, everybody decides it's time
to stop fooling around and loose weight, so they join.
I've been going to WW for almost 10 months and I've noticed a pattern.
Usually the people who join for a reason like I've mentioned above
dissappear in a few weeks. Those who join because they're ready
to do it for themselves are there to stay. (This isn't meant to
discourage anybody who is joining because summer is over!)

that the children are back in school. To many this means the beginning

at last night's meeting:
In the near future, Weight Watchers is going to start offering an
alternative type of meeting called "Inner Circle" (or something like
that . These meetings will differ from the traditional Weight Watchers
meetings in that enrollment will be limited to about a dozen people per
class. The "Inner Circle" meetings will be longer, more intense
sessions designed to give more individualized attention to those who
are having difficulty losing weight under the WW program.
If I find out any additional details in the near future, I'll pass
them on. Is there anyone out there who has also heard about these
meetings and can add additional details?

| Yes, they mentioned several months ago that they'd be starting "Inner
Circle" in Nashua. It seems to be a more personalized, smaller
group. I believe that part of the idea is to go through the program
with the same people in your group every week. It sounds like a
"deeper" version of the regular program, for people who have serious
weight problems (who doesn't?). Of course, this is all what I inferred
from what I've heard. The one thing I do know is that it is
outrageously expensive. But if it's what you need to loose weight,
I guess it's worth it.

I don't know very much about this, as I haven't been going to many meetings

but what struck me first when I read about it in WW magazine was it sounded a
lot like our At Work meetings. They were small enough that we all knew each

this type of atmosphere?

18.38 | some details | REGAL::ACKERMAN | | Fri Nov 20 1987 09:42 | 26 |
| Our leader (in Nashua) told us a few details of the new program.
It starts the second week in December and it has a new name (it's
not Quick Start anymore). The leaders have been following the new
program, and they were up to week two. She didn't want to give
us too much information but we were able to find out a few things.
I think a few foods will be added, and some major changes will be
made. You will be allowed more red meat, and they won't push the
water as hard as they do now. (I was dissapointed in this -- I
think the water helps alot.)
Another thing she mentioned is that there will be a special program
for people who have reached a plateau and can't get off of it.
This sounded great to me.
They start the new program in December because this way the current
members will have time to learn it before the giant influx of new
members takes place in January.
As much as I hate to learn a new program, this one sounds promising.
As the leader said, each WW program has worked, but each one makes
it a little easier to loose weight a little faster.

Although motivation to lose weight really has to come from within, you
both make good points about WW leaders. Think back to your school
days. Didn't you find that certain teachers did a real good job of
motivating you, and make you want to do better? I find it's the same
way with WW leaders.
As far as recommendations of specific leaders, I can without hesitation
recommend my leader, Peg Capabianco, who teaches classes in Haverhill
(Thrusdays 6 PM and 8 PM at Howard Johnson's on Route 110), Medford
(Wednesday 7 PM Grace Episcopal Church), and Methuen (Monday night,
don't recall the location offhand, if someone does could you please
post it here as I plan to go there next Monday). Peg combines a good
down-to-earth manner and sense of humor that make her classes
interesting and enjoyable. Peg also takes the time to explain things
and answer questions as needed, and never fails to encourage both those
who progress regularly and those who encounter difficulty.

I just got the flyer for the next Marlboro Weight Watchers At Work series.
The series starts January 6, and will be held in the Capacitor Conference
Room at MRO1-1/M10.
The flyer says the time will be 12 noon - 1 pm, but they may break up into
two groups again if there are enough people.
For more information, it says to contact Health Services at 297-6219.
I will try to find out at my meeting today if the time posted in the flyer
is indeed correct (for the first session at least).

I am a member of the Fitnet (employee wellness) committee here in
Augusta, Maine and we could use some help. We are planning on
bringing Weight Watchers into the plant in January. We were very
impressed with the presentation they gave and are looking forward
to a very successful program.
Our problem has to do with recruitment. We are a plant of close
to 800 people. Weight Watchers needs a commitment of atleast 20
people and believe it or not...I am not so sure we can do it. We
currently have Lifesteps here and have only 5 participants. Our
aerobics class usually averages 4 people per session. We are hoping
that the WW name will draw people out,,,but we cannot count on that
alone.
There is a vast majority of people here who could greatly benefit
from Weight Watchers, but I am having problems thinking of ways
to draw them out. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

I don't have any real answers for you but did want to share
that we went thru the same thing here in Atlanta, Ga. about
a year or 2 ago. I wanted to get WW started here but didn't
have enough of a response for them to hold meetings here.
Now I see signs up that it's being offered again and I wonder
how it will go over. (We have about 500 people in our office!)
I tried to think of ways to draw more people too, and never came
up with anything. It seems that if the people aren't interested
in losing the weight there is not much that anyone can do! I
would suggest, tho, that you publicize it well and give as much
info to people on how it works, etc. as you can. Maybe if they
know all the facts they will be more apt to sign up!
Good luck and keep us posted!

Success stories usually get people's attention. Most people want
to lose their extra weight, but no one wants to waste precious time
or money. Maybe if you included (with their permission) some of
success stories of others in this notes file who have lost weight
with WW @ work and have kept it off, more people would give it a
try. I few mentions of the fact that "Summer will soon be here",
or that "it's time to keep those New Year's resolutions", might
not be a bad idea either. BTW, with those success stories, it would
probably be a good idea to include 30-40 lb losers as well as the
50-100 lb losers so that no one can say "I'm not that overweight
so I don't need WW", or "I'm too overweight, nothing can help me".
I hope this helps.

Weight Watchers taught me how to eat correctly. It has taught me
what a normal portion size is, as well as the correct balance of
foods needed for good health.
The group support offered by Weight Watchers has been invaluable
in my weightloss effort. I have finally found a group of people
to whom I can talk freely about my weight problem. No one in my
group is judgemental - we have all been there before. And, since
I have not lost weight every week, they have been there to cheer
me on and remind me how far I have come already.
I have lost 42 pounds since January 10, 1987. I need to lose 38
more to reach the upper limit of my goal range. And I WILL lose
those 38 pounds in 1988!

Hi,
What scares away most people from joining at work is the fact that
the money has to be paid up front (all of it). In classes on the
outside, the money is paid weekly so the person really does not
see what a big bite it can develop into. For example, JOIN WEIGHT
WATCHERS...ONLY $60.00 for TEN WEEKS!!!! What happens if something
comes up and I can't make it? Then they see, JOIN WEIGHT
WATCHERS...THIS MONTHS SPECIAL..JOIN FOR ONLY $12.00!! THEN AFTERWARDS
ONLY $7.00 PER WEEK!! Self asteem has alot to do with it too.
I am the type to say, "Why should I put up front $60.00? It won't
work, they never work." I myself lack big in the self confidence
department, but so don't alot of others. This is probably one of
the biggest set-backs.
When you do advertise, make sure then know that they can apply their
membership outside the plant as well, going to as many meetings
as they want.
Do not advertise as a diet, but as a way to eat healthy and stay
healthy program.
Make arrangements with your cafe to have a WW lunch option daily
(platter)
Make sure things are easy to access (refridge, water cooler)
Good luck

I'm here in the Shrewbury, Mass plant and just attended a
introductory meeting for the "At Work Program" of Weight Watchers.
It's a new program and is based on lossing weight and working at
the same time. I thought it would be nice to good at lunch time
once a week and not have to go someplace in town. With working
it hard to find time to myself (fun things). To have to go to a
meeting one evening a week has always been difficult. The only
problem with the idea is coming up with the 69.00 dollars they want
up front. Thats hard for me right now. Moving the 1st, getting
over Christmas, ect..... Anyway they need 20 people to make this
thing go. Just thought I'd pass the info along to anyone here in
Shrewsbury. It's to meet thurdsays 12-1 in rm 312. The first meeting
is January 28th. They'll want a check on the 28th.
Good luck to anyone that goes. Maybe things will be better next
time around for me and I'll be able to join in.

Robin, it's too bad you can't afford the WW; it's a great program. If
you want to be able to do it next time, why not start setting aside
$7/week now; when the next session comes around, you'll have the money!
Is there someone (parents, sibling, close friend) who has expressed
support for your attempts at weight loss? Maybe you could borrow part
of it for this time. I know asking to borrow money is awful, but so is
having roadblocks to your desire to lose weight.
I think you'll find you spend less money on food, so paying it back
shouldn't be too much of a strain.
Good luck,
Beverly

week. Maybe be than I'll have some control of my own. Maybe in
8 weeks I'll be almost where I want to be. I have twenty pounds
more to go to get to my ideal weight. If I am almost there I might
not have go to be no maintance. Do you know if there is least amount
that you have to loose to join weight watchers? What I am asking
is that do you have to loose 10 of more pounds to join? Or can
you just have 5 or so? Just think if I am at 120 pounds in 8 weeks
I'll have 70 dollars to spend on myself. Hows that for incentive.
Maybe start with a new bathing suit

not sure. Our secretary has lost over 100 lbs on Opti-fast, and is

Spending the money on yourself if you reach goal is a good incentive;
but maybe you should stick it in a savings account for a couple of
months first, to make yourself get into maintenance habits. Then if
you slip, you'll know you really do need WW, and the money will be
there!

With regular exercise and WW, you can expect to lose 1-2 lbs/week on
the average. There's no guarantee, of course, but you sound motivated,
and that helps. Age and the length of time you've had the extra weight
are factors, too (the longer you've had it, the longer it takes to get
rid of it).
2 lbs/week comes out to 20 weeks, which is 4-5 months. So, even if
your loss is on the slow side, you should be looking pretty good by
the time high summer rolls around!
Hey; I've only got 36 more to lose! That means the same goes for me!
Wow!!
(Can you tell it hasn't sunk in yet?!)
Good luck,

you might be able to help me on.
1. What does WW do? I think what I want is a diet plan for every
day. I seem to lose weight when I count calories but it's a big
hassle. If they had a pre-planned diet I could follow, it might
help. What goes on at their meetings?
2. Most of the noters here seem to be ladies. Will I feel out of
place at a WW meeting? That's why I don't attend the noon hour
aerobics classes at work.
3. I work in Marlboro and live in Shrewsbury. The Sunday paper
had ads for many WW locations. The one in Northboro would be very
convenient for me. Is there much difference between locations?
Incidentally, I am 5'10" and weigh about 205 so I need to lose
about 35 or 40 pounds (the pounds just seemed to creep on
gradually over the last 20 years).
Thanks in advance for any info you can offer.

18.67 | You'll love it | COOKIE::WILCOX | | Tue Sep 13 1988 17:56 | 62 |
| Ed, the current WW program starts you out for the first 5 weeks with
neat little pocket-sized-but-taller booklets that list all the food
groups and the number of "exchanges" you can have from each group.
During those first weeks, the books have fold-out menu plans with
boxes beside each one for you to check off if you had a particular
selection. You are absolutely, positively able to exchange a food
listed for another if you don't like it, don't feel like eating it,
etc.. As an example, if the breakfast said something like:
Cereal, 3/4 ounce
Pear
1/2 skim milk
You could substitute anything from the Bread exchange for the cereal
and anything from the fruit group for the pear. There is also space
by each meal plan for you to write in if you did have something different.
There is also a space for optional calories. Each week for the first
five or so more selections are added to each exchange group. As an
example, the first week you don't get peanut butter but you do later
on.
After week 5 you get separate sheets to write in and check off what you
had to eat, rather than a new book with suggested menus.
As for being out of place, I can only speak for the meeting I go to
in Colorado Springs. The men are the best part! I don't mean that
in a sexist way. It's been wonderful to watch them emerge into their
new selves.
There is very little in the way of calorie counting with WW, just in terms
of the optional stuff. The check-off boxes make it a breeze to keep track
of exchanges.
Please keep in mind that WW is for life. It is not a diet that you go
on for a specified time then go off. It is a food plan. Once you reach
your goal weight in your own time you then go on maintenance for the rest
of your life. Gee, that sounds easy, wish it were so.
If you decide it's the program for you after a few weeks, I would highly
recommend you consider purchasing some of the cookbooks. I have them
all. I don't enjoy cooking all that much, but they give me great ideas,
make life more interesting, and all the exchange information is listed
for you making things easy. There is one called Fast and Fabulous that
contains recipies for things that take 1/2 hour or less. I also
subscribe to the magazine and find it usually arrives when I need a
boost (it was getting embarrassing to have it arrive on the same day
with my issue of Chocolatier, so I dropped that subscription).
I've lost 22 pounds so far, have not stuck to it 100% by any means, but
it's coming off and I plan to keep it off. You will find you slip now and
then, but the great thing is there's the next meal or next day to get right
back on the track. No one (at least at our meetings) will scold you for
falling off, only you will do that.
Let us know what you think, and feel free to send me mail if you want any
ideas on what recipies to try.

| I got my life membership key yesterday. I lost 40 pounds in
about 20 weeks and maintained a weight less then my goal for the
past 6 weeks. Now I can take the $6.75 I save per week and buy -
choose one from column A or column B
A B
Carrot sticks Twinkies
I still find it very easy to choose C but when that happens,
I go back on the program. Weight Watchers has been the only program
that has worked for me. I think it has to do with the cost. You
get nuttin for nuttin. As long as I paid all that money for WW I
stayed on the program. I just hope that since it is free for me now,
that I will stay below my goal weight. Since the alternative is
paying $$ each month I gain weight, I will probably hang in there.

18.75 | Merrimack, NH WW@W -- can we get it back? | ATSE::KASPER | Heisenberg may have been here | Mon Jan 30 1989 17:48 | 33 |
|
I just talked to Dina Kilbreth this afternoon; WW@W was supposed to resume
at MKO in January, but she hasn't set it up because (a) the turnout was
too low (under 15) for the last signup (mid December; blech!), and (b) the
Life Center is currently running a Lifesteps program, which she thought
would compete. I pointed out that the meetings for that program are at
7 something AM, which is not my idea of a good time for anything except
sleep; she wasn't aware of that.
Part of the reason for her assumption that there was insufficient interest
was the lack of inquiries -- mine was the only one. I told her about this
conference, and she's going to keep me posted, but it would probably help
get things moving again if she got a few more calls, and/or suggestions
for ways to get people enrolled in the program. Bigger/more posters are
unfortunately not an option, because of rules about outside companies and
space limitations.
If you're interested in WW at MKO, please consider giving Dina a call at
DTN 264-1815, or send me mail and I'll let her know how many people have
expressed an interest. Meetings have traditionally been 12-1 on Tuesdays;
I believe the cost last time was $64 for 8 weeks, which is the same as
traditional classes. At Work membership also makes you elligible to go to
traditional classes at no extra charge, so if you can't make the meeting
one week, you can go to an evening class instead.
I personally want very much to get the program back in here; I've found it
difficult to get myself to go to evening sessions, both because of timing
and because the atmosphere is less supportive. The group here has been
really great in the past; can we get it going again?

| They made the fruit and fat exchanges both 2-3, and decreased the
protein exchange to 4-5 for women. But, they added another float
to make it 2!!!. This is for Women on week 5. There have been
other changes for earlier weeks, like getting a floating exchange
from week 1 (!), and some foods are added to the acceptable list
earlier than they used to be.
As for not having that many proteins to begin with, I recently read
that the average adult only needs 3 ounces per day to maintain a
healthy body. (Of course I can't remember where I read it, but I do
remember it being very low!)

I've been to the At-Work classes before and didn't really care for
them - too quick, not enough time for discussion, questions. It
felt like a heard of cattle, "get 'em in, get 'em weighed, get 'em
out".
My next step is to pick up the Sunday Globe this week, hoping they've
got an ad running this week. I'd love to find a 5:30 class in the
area, but even a 7:00 class would be good. The search continues....

1-800-333-3000 is the number I got from Information. This is
their main information number. I happened to hit it when they
were having some line problems that gave me the disconnected
recording. I finally got through, but they had class listings
for the Leominster/Fitchburg/Worcester area.
1-800-556-7416 is from the newest Lowell, Mass. phone book.
This number works but didn't have classes for the area I
was looking for. They cover Lowell/Dracut/Hudson/Pelham.
1-800-487-4777 is from the newest Marlboro/Concord, Mass
phone book, and the one Chris listed in her reply. This one
had the information closest to what I was looking for.
One thing I discovered about the WW "800" numbers - if you
call one and it's not the area you're looking for, they
DO NOT have any of the other numbers to give you.

18.115 | WW in Merrimack? | SOLVIT::HAECK | Debby Haeck | Tue Jun 14 1994 23:43 | 9 |
| My daughter and I are looking for a WW in Merrimack. Maybe if we do
this together we'll both get somewhere!! It seems to me that I heard
of a meeting at St. James, but that was a long time ago. Is there
still one there? And if so, what night?
BTW: are the at-work formats different than the evening formats? When
I tried the at-work WW a few years ago I didn't find it all that great.
Never having been to any other WW, I don't know if it was the format or
the leader.

18.116 | A vote for WW@W | BPSOF::NEWBERG | | Wed Jun 15 1994 08:52 | 23 |
| I have to give my thumbs up on the WW@W program. The program is
basically the same as the other meetings, only the format is different
because the leader has to weigh in everyone before she can start. It's
funny, we didn't have a particularly charismatic leader, but since it
was the same people coming every week, we kept it together. At the outside
meetings you don't get the same people and it lacks continuity. I
always felt the buddy system works the best and the @work program gives
you lots of buddies you see every day. Your daughter can come to the
@work program, too, if it is convenient for her. It's interesting to
note that the @work programs have a lower dropout rate and most people
kept the weight off.
Also, even if you join an @work program, you can go to any outside
meeting you want, if it still works the way it used to. One other
advantage we found was that our group was able to influence the
cafeteria people and we got things like fat-free mayonaise, dijon
mustard, fat-free frozen yogurt, a cold filtered water tap, etc.
It's worth taking another look.

18.117 | call NH 1-800-371-1810 | RANGER::MAJEWSKI | | Wed Jun 15 1994 15:39 | 13 |
| my meeting listing (which was valid as of March 1994) shows WW meetings
in Merrimack on Wednesdays at 5pm, St James Methodist Church, 646 DW
Highway. You can call 1-800-371-1810 for current information. I
believe the number is a NH only 800-number.
I lost my weight via traditional meetings, and keep in touch going to
traditional meetings and the At Work meetings in LKG. I think the
biggest difference in any of the meetings is the leader. I have gone to
several different traditional meetings and find I get more out of
some meeting than others; I feel that is because of the style of
the leader.

18.118 | thanks | SOLVIT::HAECK | Debby Haeck | Wed Jun 15 1994 17:30 | 10 |
| Amy, I guess I did sound anti-@work. I didn't mean to. I am also
aware that I was at a point in my life's path when I wasn't really
ready to commit to and/or concentrate on my diet.
vivianne, thanks for the information.
Does anyone know if there is still an @work program in MKO?

18.119 | Make sure you're ready | BPSOF::NEWBERG | | Thu Jun 16 1994 08:28 | 20 |
| Good point. The bottom line is that when you're ready (and I mean
REALLY ready) the venue, format and leader won't be the big factor. If
you're not really ready, any reason to not see it through will surface.
If you're not really ready (read that as it has to be your #1 priority
in your life) it's better not to attempt it. The setback from a failure
could cause you to go overboard the other way. I have seen it many
times among friends. Getting in the mind set to begin a life-long
change is some tricky business. Part of it is learning how to eat
healthy, balanced meals and the other part of it is to face the real
reasons for overeating in the past. Sometimes it's a matter of
education and other times food is used for lots of reasons other than
staying alive. There's a lot of soul searching that goes on and a lot
of learning to love yourself. I liked the group at work because we
could discuss these things at times other than at meetings.
Good luck. The journey is well worth the effort.
Amy
PS - let me know how you do

| We tried the St. James meeting, but it doesn't exist anymore. So we
drove to the center in Bedford and happened across a meeting (6pm)
there. So, we're off!
The superstart looked like pretty standard diet choices and portions to
me, but my daughter (20, and this is the first time she's seriously
looked at a diet) said, as she scanned the light meals, "One egg roll!
That's not a meal. That's not even half a snack!"
