| Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution....Fantastic, although not a balanced
diet, it is deliberately done that way for people like myself with
an unbalanced matabolism. I'm allerigic (or should I say my waist
is allergic) to carbohydrates! As I've stated in other notes, in
the beginning, it is a 0 carbohydrate diet to start, but if you
read the book, after initial weightloss, you started adding carbs
back in until you maintain your weight, this is the amount you can
intake to maintain, less to lose, go higher, and you will gain,
but the diet is easy to follow, as there is no weighing of foods,
or counting of calories, just carbohydrates, wich are on most labels,
and you can eat all you want so you don't have to go hungry ever....

12.5 | Can't find books... | SHIRE::BIZE | | Thu Jul 16 1987 01:42 | 31 |
| Would somebody care to help me?
I have been trying to find some of the books mentioned in this
notesfile with complete lack of success. Even though Swiss bookshops
will carry the most common diet books (Dr. ATKINS, Beverly Hills
Diet, etc...) none of them have books that appeal to what happens
in your brain rather than in your stomach.
If somebody would care to give me a cost estimate for the books
in pocket edition plus postage to Switzerland, I'll gladly send
them the money (beforehand, so you won't risk being out of pocket).
I am interested in the following books:
1) The Thin Book Jeane Eddy Westin
2) Feeding the Hungry Heart Geneen Roth
3) Breaking free from Compulsive Eating idem
If anybody can help, please let me know, either through this note
or by mail to SHIRE::BIZE.
I will be on vacation next week, but will answer any query as soon
as I am back (or before, if I get an answer by Friday!)
By the way, I'd be very happy to meet any of you noters visiting
Geneva... just let me know!
Regards, Joana

| Thanks to several of you, who either send me the books or gave me
the right information to order them, I now have (since this morning
08:30 a.m. all the books I was looking for (namely: the Thin Book,
feeding the Hungry Heart and Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating,
refer to note 12.5)
Thank you very much, I'll let you know how the reading goes, and
how it helps.

12.7 | I'd rather read than exercize ... | SHIRE::BIZE | | Tue Sep 15 1987 06:20 | 22 |
| I have now finished reading the two Geneen Roth books, and would
like to recommend them to all of you who haven't read them.
The one I found most interesting was the second one "Breaking Free..."
but the first one "Feeding the Hungry Heart", even though less
directly useful, makes a good foundation for the second one.
I was able to recognize myself in many of the situations as they
describe children and adolescents problems, and it has helped me
to better understand and "forgive" myself.
I am half-way through the "Thin Book" and will let you know what
I think.
I have still to get "Fat is a feminist issue". Does anybody know
if it was published in a pocket edition, and if yes, which? I have
found a very good English bookshop in Geneva, but they will not
order books unless the have the publisher's name!

everything that has fat in it. The book is called "The Hip and
Thigh Diet". I don't know if it has been published in the States,
but it has here in England. It's a good help, I recommend it!

12.13 | New book counts more than calories! | SNOWAY::SNOW | | Fri Oct 20 1989 16:11 | 20 |
| I bought a new book just this morning that I believe is the best
I have seen on the subject because it is so complete. It is called
The Complete Book oF Food Counts by Corinne T. Netzer. With all
the concerns about cholesterol, fat, fiber, etc., this book lists
all of these and more for over 8,000 items. It includes basic generic
foods, brand name foods and fast-food items. Each items has a listing
for serving size as well as calorie counts, carbohydrate grams,
cholesterol milligrams, sodium milligrams, protein grams, fat grams
and fiber grams. Plus there is a conversion table for weight and
capacity measures. It is alphabetized for easy reference. It is
a paperback book and costs only $4.95. I got it at the Paper Store
in Maynard, but I'm sure it is available at many other stores.
Just thought some of you folks might be interested in knowing about
this. I hope I haven't repeated something from a previous note.
When you lose you win :)

I'm not sure about Fit for Life -- I think the last name is Diamond.
But Beyond Diet is by Martin Katahn, also author of The Rotation Diet.

| Fit for life is by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond.
I heartily recommend it!!, I have gone from 200+ lbs down to 176 lbs in
a relatively short time, without being a really good boy.
There is also the Fit for Life cookbook by Marilyn Diamond.
Both are published by Bantam Books

| Many of the theories in Fit for Life have no basis in science.
Especially the part about food combinations. That's been debunked
by many people over the years. Including me, in college.

12.18 | Success/Science...I take success! | JUNO::JUPP | | Thu Mar 05 1992 14:46 | 22 |
| Mike,
Science is not everything, maybe you don't think that this can work,
but I was over 200 lbs for about 10 years. Since starting on the basic
principles of Fit for Life I have managed to get down to what I think
is approximately my ideal weight. 5'10" 176 lbs. This means that I'm
back down to the weight I was before I started smoking (I gave up 11
years ago).
The principles that I try to keep too are:-
Not mixing protein and starch.
And when I have time, fruit in the morning. It is either fruit or
nothing. I very rarely have either Tea or Coffee, but I do drink Hot
Chocolate from the machine.
As I said before, It works for me. Like anything to do with weight
loss, you have to find what suits you. My friend chooses to count
calories (very strictly), and he lost 135 lbs in a calendar year!!!.
Cheers Ian...

| Some of the ideas are sound, eg: calorie reduction, but the rest
is poppycock.
Like not mixing protein and starch. Purely fictional.

Two books I found really helpful in teaching me how our body processes
fats and why some people lose and others don't:
Fit or Fat?
Fit or Fat? For Women
Target Diet
All are by Covert Bailey (who invented the method of "dunking" to
determine percent body fat).
He's also got shows on PBS every once in awhile. People don't always
like his "style" but if you can get past that and listen to what he's
saying, I think he's "right on."

12.23 | a couple books.... | PURCH7::OSHAUGHNESSY | Let LIFE be your GOAL | Wed Sep 15 1993 14:49 | 46 |

As promised Karen, just a few books that I've read. (I think this is a
little more appropriate place then in the Dave Maynard Diet)
The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life - Raymond Kurzweil (very good)
* Diet for a Small Planet - Frances Moore Lappe
* Diet for a New America - John Robbing
* The Vegetarian Handbook - Gary Null
Eat more, weigh less - Dean Ornish (next on my reading
list, although I have read alot
about him in other articles
etc.)
There are two very good books I've read from the Library, I'll have to
check out the bookstore, for the exact titles and authors. One was
about the new four food groups. Both books have been recently
published and were very good.
I have to say, that I don't always agree with everything that I read (I
still eat dairy products), but it does give you a different perspective
and something to think about, and maybe some lifestyle changes that
will work for you. I am finding a healthy lifestyle that I can live
with for me, a balance between diet and exercise. Up until the past
couple years I have always been overweight, now I'm in shape and about
the right weight and want to stay that way... HEALTHY. I've tried hard
to shake the diet mentality, 'cause it just doesn't work a healthy
low-fat approach with enough calories and exercise will take you alot
farther. I definately believe in preventative maintenance rather than
fix the symptoms with drugs and doctors, so I plan on trying my best to
stay healthy.
Just a quick note on food combining I did browse a couple of the books
last night and the concensus is that if you are eating a well balanced
diet with variety MOST people don't have to pay such close attention to
food combining. Also as an aside, if you are eating enough calories,
it is very hard for the diet to be deficient in protein, unless loaded
with empty calories.
Karen, the books with * I have, if you would like I could bring them in
for you to look at or read.
Best health to you all,
Laurie O
