| I believe the Alpha memory is different from average PC style memory
you can get on the street.
From the Sable note's conf:
However, a patented feature in the memory eliminates the memory read
cycle for sequential accesses. This eliminated the read latency of the
DRAMs from the bus transaction thus the read transaction is reduced to
the bus overhead.

| Well I recieved a mail this morning promising wonderful new response
times etc. from a new businesslink server based in Reading. Great, I
thought someone has listened!
WRONG!
The site is currently returning:
Connection failed
No space left on drive
Remote site unavailable
PS Is the gateway to internet that was promised for UK in existence
yet, and if so what should I be using for my proxy server?

| I read the same mail and had the same errors.....maybe it is just too
popular :-)
There seems to be a proxy at reo-pxy-1.reo.dec.com that appears
to be quicker to some external places, but I don't know if it has
its own link to the Internet.

| It does have its own connection to the Internet via Internet Service Provider
"The Planet".
As for whether you "should" use it, my own experience is as follows:
1) In the morning, UK access to UK servers is better via reo than pa.
2) In the morning, UK access to US servers is better via pa than reo.
3) In the afternoon, its anybody's guess which is better for where, but I have
certainly seen cases where UK access to a UK server was better via pa than reo!!!
As for access to Europe, I don't know.
It all depends on whether our internal bandwidth across the Atlantic is "better"
than the Internet bandwidth. "better" is a combination of how big the pipe is,
and how many other people are contending for it ...
