333.15Toll InfoSEDSWS::BONDIts grim up North Tue Apr 15 1997 12:3310
Does anyone know what the price of the Disc/Toll to drive through the
    following:

    1. Switzerland
    2. Austria
    3. Mont Blanc Tunnel
    4. Calais to Geneva on Motorway
    5. Italian Alps to Rimini on Motorway.

    Thanks in Advance.

Austria has different "Vignettes" (annual, two week, one week). The
    annual one is S 550,- (roughly 30). Two months is S 150, a weekly
one (from Friday to Sunday, 9 days) is S 70.

As an example, Brenner-Florence is Lit. 41,500. Going further to Rimini
shouldn't add much, but starting further West in Italy will add some.

Switzerland only has annual ones I think, roughly 20.

I hope you can still drive with all these stickers on your
windscreen... and beware, the Austrian one must be _exactly_ in the
right place (upper left corner, or up in the middle) or you can expect
    a hefty fine.

333.17Oh no - not austria!VARDAF::CHURCHDave Church@VBE (DTN 828-6125)Wed Apr 16 1997 12:079

    Austria and "Vignettes" :-(

What so someone driving through the country [say en route
Valbonne-Munich via the Brenner] will have to pay? When did this
    happen? :-(

The trip I am planning is from London to Rimini. There are roughly
three routes which can be taken.

    1.Calais - Dijon - Geneva - Mont Blanc - Aosta - Rimini

    2.Calais - Belgium - Germany - Basel - Switzerland - Milan - Rimini

    3.Calais - Belgium - Germany - Austria - Rimini

    I have done 1. and 2.

    1. This is simplest route but expensive in Motorway and Tunnel Tolls.
    2. This is more complex to navigate. Although there are no speed
limits in Germany the traffic was so dense that overall progress was
not that good. The Disc to travel through Switzerland was
    expensive.

What would anyone say is the most cost effective route overall? Or are
    there any other possibilities?

What so someone driving through the country [say en route
Valbonne-Munich via the Brenner] will have to pay? When did this
    happen? :-(

Well you always had to pay for that route - the Brenner-Autobahn
    (Brenner-Innsbruck) used to be S 140 or DM 19.

Now you need the "Vignette" to use _any_ Autobahn in Austria - you
stillhave to pay for the Brenner (but slightly less, it's S 110 now).
Of course, you could pass Austria using ordinary roads
(Brenner-Kufstein is only 110 km) and pay nothing.

re .18: I'm not really familiar with the other alternatives. I'd
guesstimate Brenner-Rimini is around 20 each way. If you're not in a
hurry, you can avoid paying in Austria (see .-1) - would probably make
0.5-1 hr more than using the Autobahn depending on traffic (sometimes
it's actually quicker to _not_ use the Autobahn).

333.21Austria for free?SEDSWS::BONDIts grim up North Wed Apr 16 1997 18:077
So the "Vignette" is just to use the Motorways , and I can travel in
Austria on "A" roads for free?

In Switzerland, I dont think that that is the case. I was just pulled
over at the "Customs" and told to hand over some cash. However, I
think that driving through Switzerland on "A" roads would be very time
    consumming.

    >So the "Vignette" is just to use the Motorways , and I can travel in
    >Austria on "A" roads for free?

Yes. At least in Kiefersfelden/Kufstein, you can actually pass the
border on the Autobahn; the Vignette is only required after the first
    exit in Austria.

This is not the case in Switzerland, so if you enter the country
through an Autobahn border station, they make you buy the sticker -
you'll be using at least a few hundred meters of Swiss motorways before
    you can get off...

Mr Mod: Please feel free to move this to a new note "Austria Vignette"
    or similar.

I am planning to drive through Austria in a couple of weeks time, entry
at Passau, and exit at Mickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom. Where am I supposed to
    buy this vignette?

I can guess that they sell them at service areas, but if the cops
pounce before I reach them then I assume I'm already guilty!

Thnx for the info - so autoroutes as well in Austria - bummer.

About the Brenner toll yep well known and well paid as we've done the
Munich-Valbonne run a number of times during my Munich and early
    Valbonne days.

I am planning to drive through Austria in a couple of weeks time, entry
at Passau, and exit at Mickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom. Where am I supposed to
    buy this vignette?

You'll get them at the border (at either the ADAC or AMTC office, and
probably at the exchange bureau too), no problem, also most service
stations on the German side (at least the ones close to the border -
the bigger ones probably have them everywhere in Bavaria). Be prepared
to stand in line for a few minutes though, if you do it at the border
    (especially weekends).

I'd assume places like RAC might sell them too (at least the German
equivalent, ADAC, does) if you want to have it in advance.
