    Is there any reason why I shouldn't apply varnish to floorboards using
    a 'paint pad' rather than a brush? I've never gotten on too well with
    brushes, and I can see it taking a long time to put just one coat down
    using a brush.

    Is there anything better than varnish? There seem to be all sorts of
    colouring/staining liquids available.

    I can think of no reason why you shouldn't use a paint pad.

    The only caution I would offer is that some varnishes can be quite
    thick, and I would think difficult to apply with a pad.

    There are all sorts of wood finishes now, it all depends what finish,
    gloss, matt, satin etc and colour you require.

    You didn't actually ask this, but I recommend the acrylic floor
    varnishes. Not only are they much harder wearing; they also dry very
    quickly - you can do 3 coats in a day. Only problem is that you have to
    make sure that you brush it all out as it dries whitish if you leave it
    too thick. For this reason, unless the floor is absolutely smooth, I
    would suggest that a brush is better (whatever the varnish). Or perhaps
    you could just use a brush on the rough bits, if any.
