3123.0. "Setting up a Domestic Network" by CHEFS::SMITH_M (Martin Smith, Reading. - 830 4544) Tue May 20 1997 10:36

    I've recently connected two PCs at home. One is running W95, and the
    other is running Windows 3.11. Both machines can see each other when
    running their respective versions of Windows software.

    I can run 'Net Start' on the W3.11 machine in DOS, and it sees the W95
    machine. However, when I restart/reboot the W95 m/c to DOS mode, it
    cannot see the W3.11 m/c. :-(

    What I would like to know is: how does one set up a W95 PC, in order
    for it to run DOS games (for example DOOM, or some of the games
    mentioned in topic 2787), with a W3.11 machine booted to DOS? What
    other software packages do I need to have? etc., etc.

    Martin. [a novice network administrator!]

3123.1have you tried this?SUBSYS::MSOUCYMentalmETALMikeTue May 20 1997 10:5616

    Hi, I am no expert on this, but what about setting up the dos boot to
    be able to run the network software (DOS based I would expect for both
    machines), or run the games from DOS windows on each machine, at least
    that way you have the network up and running. I was going to do
    something like this eventually (when I build another pentium, if I even
    do that...).

    It sounds like the network stuff isn't running on DOS because it isn't
    installed. Can you install a DOS version of this for the W95 machine?
    If so, remember to create a multi-boot scenario or boot from floppy to
    conserve as much base memory as you can. I've seen how bad these
    Digital PC's chew up memory with some networking stuff installed and
    their scripts run on startup! Talk about not much memory left!

3123.2Any chance of a file list?CHEFS::SMITH_MMartin Smith, Reading. - 830 4544Wed May 21 1997 03:2312

    This is exactly the information that I would like to know. I have tried
    making a boot floppy, by adding what I think should be on it, but at
    every startup, error messages are displayed. [I can provide a sample
    if required]

    A note (in this topic) containing a list of files for a boot floppy
    would be *very* useful.

3123.3Just use Windows 95alfras1_port13.alf.dec.com::jenningsI'm still hereWed May 21 1997 07:519
The easiest thing is to just boot Windows 95 and run the DOS games in a DOS
session. If you just boot DOS, then you'll need real mode network drivers, real
mode CD-ROM drivers, real mode disk cache, etc. All those things are
already built into Windows 95!

I have two computers at home and used to use DOS with real mode drivers for
gaming. Just for grins, I decided to rip out all the real mode stuff and just
boot W95. Guess what, the performance was better using the normal W95 code.
Plus, I got a TCP/IP stack as well as the NETBEUI and NPX/IPX stacks.
3123.4Using IPX???45862::16.42.3.105::hiltong[email protected]Tue May 27 1997 12:4913
Martin,

Assuming you are trying to use IPX (Novell Netware) you need some
files, then run this these files from DOS:

lsl.com
decmlid.com ---> This is unique to your Ethernet card, it's the
Novell ODI driver, should be on a diskette.
ipxodi.com

3123.5One of life's ...CHEFS::SMITH_MMartin Smith, Reading. - 830 4544Fri May 30 1997 02:536
    Thanks Greg,

    I have always wondered from where IPX originated - I had no idea it was
    from Novell.

    Martin.
3123.6Does it work?45862::16.195.80.69::hiltong[email protected]Fri May 30 1997 04:591
So are you up and Deathmatching, Martin?

    Not yet Greg; ETD (expected time of Deathmatching! is tomorrow,
    assuming my son is not going out.
