3118.0. "3dFX/VooDoo 3d-Accelerator" by RTOMS::HUEBNERS (www.muc.de/~sh) Fri Mar 21 1997 10:10

Hello !

Has anybody in this group also bought a 3dFX-Accelerator ?

I got mine yesterday (Diamond Monster 3D).

The card is an addon to any existing 2d-Adapter (works well with
my Millenium). It supports Perspective-correct texture mapping,
Z-buffering, advanced texture filtering, Anti-aliasing,
Gouraud shading, etc. (see www.diamondmm.com for details)

The graphic is incredible ! Its like playing games in the arcade.
Descent II runs at about 40 fps (on a 166 MMX/EDO). With the GL-Version of
Quake I get about 38 fps. The textures are totally different than in
the standard game versions. Eg. there are no more "big" pixels visable if
you look at walls from close distance. Look at
http://www.orchid.com/products/righteous/comparison.html
for a comparison.

One disadvantage is that the games only run in 640x480x16bpp screen mode.

I also bought POD, which supports both MMX (Dolby Surround) and native
3dFX. Its a car race and it makes use of animated textures. Its the best
car race I've ever seen on PCs. I suspect the Frame Rate also is about
40 fps. It supports split-screen modes for two players, which is
playable at the same gamespeed.

I hope to see more games with support for the Voodoo-chipset; Formula1
from Psygnosis and Xwing vs. Tiefighter are hot candidates :-)

    Stefan,

How did you choose between the Monster 3D and the righteous Orchid 3d?

re: .0

Awesome! Based on the review in .0, I went and got one yesterday. It really
blows your socks off. Not only are the accelerated games much, much faster, but
they look really good. In fact, the first few times I was playing GLQuake, I
kept getting killed because I was doing too much sight-seeing!

To give you an idea of the amount of acceleration, in the opening screen of the
Quake Mission Pack I, I was getting 17 frames per second at 538x400 with a
Matrox Mystique. With the 3Dfx, I get 40 fps at 640x480 and the visual
appearance is much more pleasing.

Now, does anyone know how I can get my full version of Descent II to use the
3Dfx? (The version shipped with the card is the shareware version).

I also bought an Orchid R3D yesterday, AWESOME!!

I got bundled Descent II with the card, as well as Fatal Racing, MW2
and Actua Soccer, all 3DFX enchanced!!

You can just buy Descent ][ and then download a patch to run the 3dfx
    version.

3118.6Anyone want some 3dfx games?45862::rasmodem43.reo.dec.com::hiltong[email protected]Thu May 01 1997 05:0711
This card never ceases to amaze me, some of the demos are great!

Just got TombRaider for it which is gobsmacking!

Anyhow, I got some free games with the Orchid, and I got two copies
of Fatal Racing (known as Whiplash in the USA), and Actua Socccer. I
also got MechWarrior II which I don't like.

So I'll sell or swop 'em with other 3dfx owners/games.

    I bought a Matrox Mystique 2mb for my P166.
I managed to get a tad more speed in GP2.
A - Would it improve if I upgraded to 4mb.

B - Can I add a Voodoo 3D to my Mystique, or do I have to install my
2D card Diamond Stealth, which I still have to run with it.

C - Which would be faster.
The Mystique with 4mb, or the 2D Diamond Stealth along with the
    VooDoo Accelerator.

    D - How much for a VooDoo?

    Thanks.

A - Would it improve if I upgraded to 4mb.

>> Not sure it would make much difference to GP2

B - Can I add a Voodoo 3D to my Mystique, or do I have to install
my 2D card Diamond Stealth, which I still have to run with it.

>> Yep, you can add the Voodoo.

C - Which would be faster.
The Mystique with 4mb, or the 2D Diamond Stealth along with the
    VooDoo Accelerator.

>> Depends on the game, any 3d game will be loads faster on the
Voodoo, assuming ie either uses Direct3D or native 3dfx, ie GL Quake,
Tombraider etc. F1 GP2 will make no difference.

    D - How much for a VooDoo?

A MONSTER 3
fx board from Diamond is $184 from NECX Direct. It works just fine with a
Matrox card. I have mine working with a Millennium.

Got this in the mail, IMHO, the Creative 3D isn't a patch on the
3dfx, but the game will fly on the 3dfx card due to the native glide
port!

NEWSFLASH! NEWSFLASH! NEWSFLASH! 16th
May 1997

Dear Greg,

Leading software developer, Psygnosis, has today launched the
outstanding
Formula 1 for Windows 95 in the UK.

Packed full of stunning, real-time graphics, Formula 1 is the first
PC game
ever to REQUIRE AS STANDARD a high performance 3D graphics
accelerator such as
3D Blaster PCI. A highly optimised version, designed to take
particular advantage
of 3D Blaster's unique features, is included on the standard retail
Formula 1 CD.

Clearly Psygnosis is setting the trend for the future, and Creative
Labs is
pleased to participate in this momentous occasion with a special
offer available
exclusively through Game stores across the UK and Ireland:

Formula 1 boasts the official FOCA/FIA Formula 1 World Championship
racing
license, and realism and speed are the guiding principles throughout.
Every
driver, track, and option has been optimised to provide the most
complete
racing experience outside the real racetrack. Even the engine noises
are based
on DAT recordings taken from a real Formula 1 race car.

With PC games increasingly relying on hardware accelerators to bring

arcade-quality action on to the home PC, there has never been a
better time
to upgrade the graphics card in your PC.

3D Blaster PCI is the only 2D/3D card available today that offers
outstanding
3D performance without compromising image quality. And backed by the
full might
of the Creative Labs organisation, it offers the best 3D title
support in the
industry.

Yes, but I think it lists 4mb as min video memory.

Got it on Sunday, not much time to play yet, very different to F1 GP2
