637.1 | More infor on new instructions | TKOV50::NAKANO | | Mon Feb 10 1997 02:01 | 8 |
| Intel has been introduced MMX and added 50 new instruction to pentium.
.o mentioned that we add 13 new instruction.
Could you explain more about new instructions for multimedia such as
MPEG2 encode and decode instruction?

| They are described in full in version 3 of the Alpha architecture
handbook. See section 4.13. The handbook is available on the
Web at
http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/info/semiconductor/literature/alphahb2.pdf
They are not really MPEG2 specific, but rather only a few instructions
for byte and short vector max/min, a motion estimation primitive and
multiplexing/demultiplexing of color planes (byte/short to short/int).

| For MMX info, see the CACM article referenced in 625.0
One of the reasons MMX has so many instructions is that they added a
lot just to do 64-bit integer operations in the floating point stack
where MMX data lives. Alpha has native 64-bit integer operations and
did not need to add nearly so many.

+ 600MHZ ALPHA SYSTEMS DUE THIS YEAR
The 600MHz 21264 Alpha chip that Digital Equipment Corp took
along to the International Solid State Circuits Conference
recently, was taped out in December, and a fully verified first
pass is at the end of this quarter. No product could be
reasonably expected before the second half of the year.
Meanwhile, DEC and Mitsubishi Electric Corp are said to have
tested a whopping 625MHz species of their intended high-volume
21164PC econo chip. The 550MHz version is said to have booted
NT on the first pass.
