103.0. "500 server error" by STKAI1::HALLGREN (Per Hallgren @SOO) Tue Mar 25 1997 07:50

About 6 months ago a collegue installed the gateway on the Stockholm
VTX node STKVTX. It was working before, but now it returns a "500
    server error" message.

I am familiar with VTX but was not involved in the gateway
installation, so I would really appreciate some suggestions on where to
    start looking for errors.

    First line in VTX_WWW_GWP.INI is:

    <a href="//stkvtx.soo.dec.com:8080/cgi-bin/vtx

and is seems like Netscape is trying to connect to exactly that address
before the "500 error" message appears.

Btw, the VTX_WWW_GW.EXE we use seems quite old, here is the result from
    an ANALYZE command:

          Image Identification Information

                    image name: "VTX_WWW_GW"
image file identification: "VTX GW T1.0-2"
                    link date/time: 2-AUG-1996 11:21:41.24
                    linker identification: "05-13"

            Patch Information

There are no patches at this time.

Is there a more recent version that I can pick up somewhere?

    Thanks for any help!

    Best regards,

generally for server errors, you look in the server's error log.
Depepending which server it is, it's usually in the logs directory.
It's usually something in the command file.

Netscape servers have a way to view errors from the admin server,
but it does the same thing - check errors. in the logs directory.

There are more recent versions. Is this an alpha or vax?

First, the server is running on a VAX.

I have found a couple of log files. One is called
ACCESS.LOG_STKVTX_8080;1 and has a lot of lines at the end looking like
    this:

    sooras-203-0-105.soo.dec.com - - [25/Mar/1997:16:14:39 +0200]
    "GET /cgi-bin/vtx HTTP/1.0" 500 0

The other is called ERROR.LOG_STKVTX_8080;1 and is over 45000 blocks.
The last lines look like this:

    [Tue Mar 25 16:11:47 1997] httpd: malformed header < z!> from script
    [Tue Mar 25 16:14:39 1997] httpd: malformed header < !> from script

As you can see, the last line in both files have the same time stamp.
    Does this give a clue?

    Thanks and best regards,

    Yep, it's the error*.log* we're interested in.

That Z! almost looks like someone wanted to add a comment and
entered z instead of control Z.

First place to look would be in your cgi-bin directory at
vtx.com.... or set your password to something you can mail
me and let me know node and account name and I'll see if I can get
it running. Perhaps install the "latest", also.

103.4Still doesn't work...STKAI1::HALLGRENPer Hallgren @SOOWed May 14 1997 12:0416
There is still something weird going on with our Gateway...

After restarting the HTTP Server averything works fine - for a couple
of hours or so. After that it hangs or displays the 500 error. It also
leaves a line in the error log:

Thread <3> is killed while serving request GET /cgi-bin/vtx HTTP/1.0

This instability with our gateway is causing a lot of problems, since a
growing number of Swedish DIGITAL employees is migrating to the
Exchange world, where they have no access to VTX other than through the
gateway, so any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
