Latest on the "Role of the TA" argument. The MOD is considering forming composite TA units for UN tours. These units would consist entirely of volunteers serving a nine month tour, 3 months training in Germany followed by 6 months UN duty. When our coy 2i/c informed us of this last night he stressed that it was just an idea but asked how many people might be interested. He also stressed that a poor response, if it was brought in, could be used as a strong argument in the "what use is the TA" saga Steve..

Steve, In the article I read these tours were not only for UN duties. It did state that Northern Ireland is an area the TA won't be going to though. There will be tours with the regulars wherever they are in the world. Legislation will be passed to ensure you have a job to come back to. Maybe I'm putting 2+2 together and getting 5 but my old unit, the movers, had a Wing Commander appointed as CO which is normally too senior a rank for that role, I think. But if the TA are going to be working throughout the world they're going to need transport and the RAF will probably provide some of it. So the movers will need someone with a bit of clout to ensure the job gets done. I think it's a lot more than an idea under consideration, Steve. Dave

Dave, you could be right. Rather then speculate I'm going to wait for an official announcement. Steve..
