189.0. "Digital, redundancies and reserves." by PEKING::NASHD (going down in a blaze of glory...) Tue Sep 08 1992 19:21

I'm just off to do another basic recruit training course. Two weeks of
learning how to march etc. I'm actually looking forward to it as I've
been out of the reserves for a long time now, it'll be great fun.

But at the back of my mind I'm thinking of all the redundancies
happening in the company. I'm wondering if, in the long term, I'll
have more job security if I don't go - but then I tell myself that two
weeks is not going to make any difference now. That I'll come back more
    motivated etc.

There's no dount I'll go but I admit to being a little apprehensive
about my job, which I do enjoy basically.

Anyone else feeling the same way? ( or able to express the above
    clearer?)

     Dave,

Go to camp and enjoy yourseif, you will come back feeling a lot
         better believe me.
Redundancies in this company is a thing we are all having to face,
you going away for two weeks will not change anything.
A saying we have is " WHATS FOR YOU WON'T GO BY YOU "

All the best and have a good time

                                        Billy.

I'm back. Had a great time. I'll tell more once I've settled in, caught
up with the mail etc etc.

Four peoples' jobs were made redundant whilst I was out. As I was
absent I wasn't included in the overall discussions.

    Hi Dave,

I think I know how you feel, I'm due to do my RAMC2 in March (if it
ever gets confirmed), and I'm just about to move into another slot over
in Dec Park, I'm actually unsure if I mentioned to my new boss that I'm
in the TA, It worry's me a little bit, because of the present climate.
I know that I will have to tell him, but it makes you think that if a
situation came up where he had to decide to give someone the heevhoee,
whether he would pick you or not, cause your off training for 2 weeks
of the year, then you've got any other additional training that you
might want to do, plus annual leave.

It does make you wonder doesn't it.

I hear that 10,000 British troops are to be sent to Bosnia. That scale
of movement will take a lot of effort so I've warned my boss that it's
likely my unit will be called-up. Once again it raises the question of
job security though, I confess to being a little worried about not
having a job to come back to if we were activated.

Incidentally, I haven't heard anything official about being called up,
    it's my own speculation.
