183.0. "Survival Techniques" by TRMPTN::FRENCHS (Semper in excernere) Tue Dec 17 1991 12:40
Well how about this for wound cleaning. I assume its more for the infected
wound that the flesh has started to die. Maybe even gone gangreneous (sp?).
I got this from the USENET news ALT.TASTELESS.
Anybody else got some tips for survival...

Well, I just picked up a copy of the _Army Survival Manual_ yesterday.
THIS BOOK IS A NATIONAL TREASURE! Along with the obligatory references to bugs
as food, there was a priceless section on cleaning out severely infected
wounds. The instructions described performing what is quaintly referred to as
"maggot therapy," and it basically entails exposing the wound to flies, and
letting the maggots munch away the diseased tissue. How do you know when
they're done? Simple -- It starts hurting more!
Iffen ya want, I'll post a step-by-step procedure when I have the book
with me....

Vanderbilt has my permission to disagree, if they really think that's wise.

| When they taught us that, they also said you should eat the maggots
as they were an excellent source of protine and heaven only knows
what else....food likely to be in short supply...
