| Can you imagine doing an assault course carrying a brief case and an
umbrella, wearing a pin-stripe suit? Or seeing some managers....no I
mustn't be disrespectful.
We would probably have to have more meetings to discuss how to tackle
the course.
Mind you, the amount of activity in DECpark at the moment with all the
movements of people and desks, it's comparable to an assault course.
Dave
PS: Ian, the bit about 'in a few weeks' , not bad news I hope.

| Re the bit about "in a few weeks", well it's down to a few hours now ... now
where did I put those forms for drawing a military pension in a foreign country
and getting permission/security clearance to live in the country of my choice?
---
as for the "assault course" - one of the managers didn't manage one of the
jumps properly and left on crutches, with a suspected broken ankle!

OK: now it's official.
I have been "in transition" since the start of the fiscal year, since the group
I was in ("VMS base systems") metamorphosed into "production systems" and I
found myself with a skill set that didn't meet the needs of the group.
Unfortunately I have been unable to find another slot within the company and as
such will be accepting redundancy and leaving sometime soon.
My current plans are fairly vague: I have decided to go freelance as a system
manager/performance consultant with a bit of system security thrown in. In
addition I have reactivated my old photographic company, and in the longer term
that is what I expect to do full time. The vague bit is that I haven't
decided whether to do this in England or Thailand: the Thai cost of living
is about 1/3 of ours, and the rate of inflation is about 3% p.a., so I could
live quite nicely thank you on my army pensions from the British and Thai
armies, and play around as a freelance photographer...
Anyway - I've enjoyed the last 12+ years with DEC, and I'll miss the
companionship of the net. But you never know I could be back (DEC *has* got
an office in Thailand, and the computer industry is burgeoning out there...)

| Ian,
I'll be the first to bid you farewell then.
I've enjoyed reading your notes over the years, and thanks for the
comments on moderating this conference.
If you can drop me a line from time to time I'll enter it in the
conference, assuming I'm still around of course.
Good luck,
Dave

| Sawadee, Colonel.
For those who were not stationed in Thailand during the South East Asia
War Games, Sawadee is Thai for both "Hello" and "Good-Bye". I hope in
this case it means both Good-Bye for now and Hello for some other day.
