151.0. "SELRES Looking for a home" by JUPITR::WHYNOT (SK2 - USNR) Wed Feb 13 1991 17:42

I'm looking for some advise from my fellow Navy Reservists.

Currently I'm a SELRES SK2 aboard the USS Valdez (FF-1096) out of
Newport, R.I. I've passed the test twice....first time they wouldn't
give me SK1 because I had transfered back from the Coast Guard Reserve,
and hadn't been back in the USNR for the three years. The second time
I PNA'd...missed by 2.87...I just took the test again.

Talk is that the "Courageous Combatant" may be decom'd later
this year. If that is true, I'd prefer to transfer to another NRF..
Frigate...Minesweep...whatever......I have my three years aboard an
NRF..but would still prefer to stay afloat...The Vulcan out of New
London doesn't count....

If there are no billets available on any of the ships...I'd like to
hear of some "GOOD" units to look into..

I WANT TO AVOID AT ALL POSSIBLE - SITTING IN A RESERVE CENTER....

If any of you fellow SELRES could recommend units where they actually
go places and do things on weekends...please let me know...I've heard
of MIUW's, Crafts of Opportunity, etc....but...there must be some
folks out there that can share some experience and provide some
alternatives....

FWIW....being attached to a unit that may get called up is not an
issue or concern to me.

This is all pre-planning....Maybe with the current mid-east situation,
they'll keep VALDEZ steaming....But I'd like to start looking at some
other options....just in case...

If anyone out there cares to pass on some "know-how", please contact
me on JUPITR::Whynot or 237-2929.

Thanks..

Good luck on your search.

Thanks guys.....I'm also going to check on the SKCM that was attached
to Valdez and is now at SIMA....

Thanks for the info...

QMC...Do you have a BM1 (could be BMC by now) O'Malley with your unit?

Last I knew he worked for one of the shuttle services from Logan to New
York....Pass him my best...

Thanks again....

Yes, O,Malley is in the unit. He drills on a different weekend than me
since he is in a different crew. He is still a BM1.

Well...I guess it's unoffically offical...But it looks like the Valdez
will be Decommissioned this coming December....If what I've heard holds
true....a new home is needed...provided of course I make SK1...

I missed this last one by point 19 (.19). Amazing that you can get so
close....

Since the word is pretty strong around the ship..it's time to start
making the calls.. So...To those who drop me a note earlier...Many
thanks....If you have any updates...please pass them along..

This will be the hird ship I've put out of commission...Must be some
sorta magical power I have...

151.8Bad news from the 'bees too...BOWLES::BOWLESBob Bowles - T&N EIC/EngineeringSun Jun 16 1991 21:075

Unfortunately RNMCB12 is overmanned at this time with SK types. There
are even some rumors of decommission ... I'd be looking for a new home
too ... and battalions are usually the only home of EA billets.

151.9I found a home...JUPITR::WHYNOTSK1 - USNRThu Aug 08 1991 23:1115

Well.....Good things do happen once and awhile....

First....I made First....That is I was awarded a Command Advancement to
Storekeeper First Class effective July 14th, by the Commanding Officer
of the USS Valdez....Really made my weekend.....

Second....I've found a home for at least the next two and a half
years...I found out today..thru a little phone call snooping that I
felt inclined to perform..that I'll be heading to the USS Clark FFG-11
out of Newport, R.I.....Sounds better than a Reserve Center to me...

Thanks guys for the inputs....
