It appears that the Army and Air Guards are taking different approaches to the requirements of Desert Shield. The Army is alerting and then activating units on a functional needs basis. The Air Guard has activated specific flying units on a partial basis but is using volunteerism for support roles. The concept being that if enough people volunteer, there is no need to activate units. Both approaches are Title 10 Active Duty and provide the same pay/benefits. The Air Guard is using the volunteers to rotate personnel on a 60-90 day commitment. The reservist may be in direct support to Desert Shield or may releive active duty personnel anywhere in the world. Under either approach, almost every Air Guard unit will be affected. PZ

Some of the volunteers at Westover have just about run out of time and it seems more expedient to activate a few (1300+) reservists. Sixty-eight from my unit (inluding me) were activated effective Monday, 3 Dec 90 at 0001 for 180 days. See you all when I get back. In the mean time I will be checking the notes and my mail from home on my days off. We are supposed to be working 3 days on and 3 days off. Hope it pans out. Oh, by the way, I am in an Aerial Port Squadron based at Westover. Bruce B. | |||||
