121.1 | here's one reason | COOKIE::SIMON | | Tue Sep 25 1990 21:14 | 21 |
| Speaking for myself, I have been working, off and on, on an active AFRes
IMA slot since I got out of the AF 4 years ago. My big problem has
always been that there are not very many 4924 - Computer Systems
Development Officer - officer slots available, and the AF, due to
budget considerations, wasn't willing to retrain a reservist into
something like Intelligence or a non-related career field.
However...I am currently taking a different approach, which looks like
it is working. I am working a 2724 Captain slot - Computer Systems
Acquisition Officer (as opposed to Development Officer - in the AF, a
totally different career field) for which there are about 30 slots
open, including 1 here in Colo. Springs. Even though on active duty
the AF wasn't very willing to move me from a 4924 to a 2724 (though
my background is qualified for either), the reserves appear a bit more
willing. So, hopefully, within a couple of weeks, I should have my IMA
slot.
Summarizing, at least in the AFRes, it isn't always easy to just say "I
want a reserve slot" and have one waiting for you; depending on the
career field - and it is more difficult for officers - there may not
be anything open at all.

121.2 | Try the COMM side | MSDOA::HORTON | Never Say Never | Wed Sep 26 1990 15:12 | 5 |
| There are many Air Guard communications units that are in need of 49XX
officers. Allow most of the positions are not 492X, you should be able
to get acceptance easily to the 494X.

121.3 | Career Field Merger Problem | COOKIE::SIMON | | Wed Sep 26 1990 17:43 | 27 |
| The problem I found with 494X slots is they are very
communications, electronics-oriented, etc., as opposed to
software-oriented. I became a 4924 as a result of the AF's
computer-communications career field merger in 1984 or 1985, and had
previously been a 5135 (computer systems development officer); the 494X
people had previously been 30XX communications types. Since 1985, most
or all 49XX people have been required to attend one of several
orientation courses at Keesler AFB prior to their assignment, the
purpose of which is to orient software people to comm and vice versa.
This way, a person could jump between computers and comm. very easily.
However, I came on active duty in 1982 before this all started and
don't have any formal comm. training or experience. Thus, I need to
attend a Keesler class to even be qualified for a 494X slot, and the AF
has been cutting back on the reserves and guard people in extended TDY
training classes in the past couple of years. Therefore, even though
4924 and 4944 slots both have the same prefix, for someone like me who
came in before the career field merger the comm. slot might as well be
Air Force Band Trumpet Officer or something similar; the required
training isn't readily available.
Ironically, I talked with the IMA SMSgt at Peterson AFB today and he
told me that AFSPACECOM is in the process of approving my 2724 AFSC;
it's a screwy system where I can get pencil approval for a totally
different AFSC category and need tech. training which is mostly
unavailable for a related AFSC. But, that's the way it goes. I'd be
happier in the computer acquisitions career field anyway.

Hell, just go Infantry. They need grunts more than they need gadget
mechanics.

| I finally received my orders assigning me to a USAR Combat Support
Company in New Hampshire - 16th Infantry Brigade. It took nearly 10
months from the time I located a slot until all the paperwork went
through. Of course, that consisted of getting discharged from the
California Army National Guard, picked up by USAR Control Group as
Individual Ready Reserve and generating the assignment orders.
At any rate, it's good to be back on-line.

121.7 | any unit vacancies?? | CSS::VALCOURT | | Thu Oct 04 1990 19:48 | 9 |
| Hello. I have been commuting to RI for the past few years so I could
attend my drills and the drive is getting old. Just wondering if there
are any NH Army Reserves (Signal) units out ( I live in Nashua) there
who are in need of 1Lt's?? Any info anybody could provide will be
greatly accepted.
Thanks,
Ken

| As I recall, there is a small signal unit in Maynard, MA. It is
located in a bunker about 1/2 mile past the Parker St site.
Why not call the 94th Army Reserve Command at Bedford and ask
about it?
Another alternative is the 126th MI BN, some of their units
are in Massachusetts, but most are in Conn & R.I.
One number that seems to work is 617-377-3962.
