117.0. "Digital Changes it's Reserve Policy" by HAVOC::KENDRICK () Fri Aug 31 1990 17:12

    This is taken from Livewire - Corporate asked me to put this in here:

    Temporary Revision to U.S. Military Reserve Policy

    In light of the current Iraqi/Kuwaiti situation, Digital has
    temporarily revised its U.S. policy 4.17 on Military Reserve Training.

    Digital feels it is important to support employees in the U.S. Military
    Reserves who have been called for active duty. Therefore, Digital will
    make up the difference between the employee's military pay and regular
    base pay for up to 90 days (rather than the usual two weeks as stated
    in the current policy), if the employee's military pay is less than the
    regular base pay.

    The employee's dependents will retain their Digital benefits (medical,
    health and life insurance) for at least 90 days. Details on continuing
    benefits coverage for affected employees are still being worked out.

    Employees are to notify their supervisors as soon as possible after
    they have been called up.

    Details of the necessary administrative processes and procedures will
    be forthcoming.

117.1Good News !A1VAX::BOHRERFri Aug 31 1990 19:0713
	This is good news.!!

	I have been concerned about the LARGE reduction in pay my family would
undergo if I am called up. On the news last Fri. they announced the callup of
a unit I was drilling with 4 years ago. I won't/can't say what my current
possibilities are of a callup are but the unit is keeping close tabs on us.
	At least this would lessen the financial burden when you have 4
children at home.

    Good news would be an understatement. That the company is willing to
    stand by thier people to ensure that they are not financially drawn is
    why despite the good, the bad and the ugly about this company..I am
    proud to be associated with this company.

    Whether the policy comes down from Ken or not...it still shows that
    those of us who are active reservists are being supported here in the
    work place. My current boss and those I've had in the past (except for
    one) have always been supportive and understanding. Not so in many
    other companies.

    I wish I had an address to write to, to voice my thanks.

    How many here, were around in during the Blizzard of '78!!! DEC was one
    of the first and few companies, that paid their employees...Wage class
    notwithstanding, for the week we were out. I've been a fan of this
    place ever since.

    Hey QMC....The Valdez is still floating....currently at Gen Ship - E.
    Boston.

    Thank you for your understanding and backing, DEC. The company's generous
    intervention on behalf of all employees who are reservists is
    noteworthy indeed. I, for one, am at ease with the current situation,
    knowing the company is behind the reserve program, and has given an
    extra measure of financial assurance to us (and our dependents) should
    we have to serve.  Bravo!

117.4Only in Canada you say!TROA02::SKLEINTue Sep 04 1990 20:549
I checked our policy in Canada (not that I am expecting to be called up), and
all DEC Canada has is an unpaid military leave of absence. My army pay is
probably 60% of regular pay, so I can't afford to be called up.

Ian, is this the same in Britain? What about the Ozzie members of the
conference?

    When I am being detained at Her Majesty's pleasure DEC have continued
    to pay me my normal salary. In fact our P's & P's state up to 6 weeks
    leave is permitted, I assume that means on full pay.
    As far as I know no directive has been issued as to what happens after
    that. I think I'll ask though.

re back a few: I haven't checked on British policy: my pay as a Colonel is about
double what DEC pay me, so it hasn't been an issue for a while :-)

(Thanks to Saddam I hope to pay off my [Thai] mortgage this year... perhaps the
*only* good thing to come out of this crisis!)

    re the last few

    DEC's US policy up until this crisis has been if a reservist was called
    up that employee would take a leave of absence - no money - no
    benefits, etc. This policy change is temporary and most likely will be
    changed back to the previous policy once the reserves are all back to
    work.

117.8UK Policy.PEKING::NASHDWake me up when it's bedtime..Wed Sep 05 1990 19:078
    The UK policy seems to be just as you described the old US policy.

    However, I asked about pay etc for the UK reservists that might be
    called up and there was stunned silence. Apparently no one has
    considered it yet. I'm due to receive an update tomorrow lunchtime
    ( as in Reading mean time) and I'll pass on any news.

    So far the replies have consisted mainly of grunts followed by various
    comments about not having considered it yet.
    As far as I know Alistair Wright (Country Personnel person) is
    reviewing the position.
    When I get some news I'll pass it on.

		RE: .10 & .11

	Based on U.S. law a company does not have to give us any money while
we are away during our 2 weeks. It sounds from your comments that the policies
are the same in the U.K. DEC , like many large companies, makes up the
difference between the lower military pay and our regular pay. Being on salary
I am paid while I am away and have to submit a pay voucher with orders when I
get back to allow DEC to take out the excess money I received due to being
paid by 2 organizations at the same time.

	I think DEC is generous in this way and you are taking advantage of
the trust that DEC has placed on us. This is stealing and jeopardizes the
priviledge for the rest of us.

117.13Couldn't agree more with .12ALLVAX::BRETCrazy Hawaiian DTN 289-1604Fri Sep 14 1990 15:548
    I have to agree with .12. There are some companies that don't pay you
    at all when you are on reserve status. We, at Digital, are VERY
    fortunate that they will pay us the difference between the two so that
    we don't get hurt by the lower military pay. I realize that there are
    some that make more in the military, but that is not always the case.
    I for one, would be very unhappy if the policy changes due to a very
    few who don't play the game properly. We all know what's right and
    it's up to us to do it!
117.14PEKING::NASHDWake me up when it's bedtime..Fri Sep 14 1990 19:1018
    Gentlemen,

    I have to agree with you about DEC's attitude to reserves. I've worked
    for several companies and this is the only one that has given support.

    I would not want to encourage anyone to steal and to be honest, none
    of my managers said anything before or after my only annual camp whilst
    at DEC. It was not until I read the preceding comments I realised
    exactly what has happened. So, when I get the necessary facts together
    I'll delete one of my earlier notes that has had no reply and replace
    it with a topic dedicated to DEC's policy on Reserves.
    Also, the 2 notes referring to this practise wil be deleted.

    This topic can then continue along it's present lines regarding the
    Gulf state.
