99.0. "soldiers in sneakers..." by BRABAM::PHILPOTT (Col I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' Philpott) Mon Apr 23 1990 15:03

I read in one of the many newspapers I read over the weekend (and of course now
I can't find it) that following many complaints about tendon pain caused by the
improved boots introduced after the Falklands war (the old boots of course
leaked which caused incidences of trench foot), the British Army has now agreed
that except on certain occasions (such as formal parades) soldiers will be
allowed to wear training shoes (sneakers to our American readers).

Of course with typical ministry parsimony they will have to buy their own!

Any comments?

99.1JP4 resistant models?MPGS::MCCLUREWhy Me???Mon Apr 23 1990 17:428
    Ummm, I hope that there is a proscribed set of acceptable models.
    Camoflage patterns are available here. Its just that my first
    mental image is of soldiers with glow-in-the-dark colors. Also,
    safety toe sneakers are available. Are we talking high tops for
    better ankle support? I don't know, maybe I'm just too traditional
    for this.

    Sneakers? Jeez, when I think of all the crap I've trudged through and
    the times that the razor ribbon ripped my boots to shreds not to
    mention the unfriendly pointy things my size 12s have stomped upon and
    the critter bites I didn't get on my ankles, I dunno. Maybe the next
    war will be fought on pavement?

    Of course, I wear combat boots when I mow the lawn!! 8-)

Well I asked and got the following:

many soldiers will already have standard black plimsolls (gym shoes) and may
use those.

Otherwise they may buy white or black "jogging style" training shoes from any
supplier.

Flourescent colours and pretty pastel shades won't be allowed...

They may be used for all training, including long distance marches. The only
exceptions are parades, inspections, assault courses, and combat exercises.

    It's ashame with all the improvements made in manufacturing
    that someone make can't a "boot" with the support of a "sneaker".

    Hummm the "soft shoe" sneaker is no stranger to the Navy..
    Every "brown water" small boat operation group I know of
    was and probably is still wearing them. Most of the Navy
    divers and SEAL team people were also. A lot less slippery
    and better footing around wet decks..While not the standard
    footware around big ships, around the Special Boat units and
    Crafmaster crowd they are the in thing..
