| My father was in the USN at Pearl when the attack took place. He
wasn't injured. Being a member of an underwater salvage team he was
involved with bringing up the bodies and cleaning up the mess at the
bottom of the harbor. Not a happy task and something we tend to not
think about when contemplating the effects of combat.
You may be interested to know that Japan memorializes December 8 as
Pearl Harbor day. Being on the other side of the date line, it was
the 8th in Japan when the attack took place. It's memorialized there
as a day of national shame. Their attitude towards the whole war is
that it was a horrible mistake and they've suffered mightily for it.
I'm in the GIA and a member of our staff is Japanese, here with his
family on temporary assignment from Tokyo. He took us to lunch today.
It will be our turn to buy for him next August, the anniversary month
of the US dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
