| I am looking for a US Army fur lined parka with fur rimmed hood.
These are authorized for wear in New England but are not issued.
Actually, I am looking for a better price than the clothing sales
store prices at Ft Devens! Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen them in the army surplus store in central Nashua.
It's been a while and I forget the proper name of the store... but
surely somebody in the area can oblige :-)

To all our cousins over the pond in Jolly Olde England.
I'm looking for the address/telephone number of a company named
Artkis in Exeter. They make specialized military harnesses and
LBE equipment.
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Hi Ian,
Saw a picture of a RN Marine wearing one in a copy of Soldier of
Fortune. The caption says he had it made special order by that
company. I'm sure I copied the caption information correctly as
I was holding the magazine in my hand when I sent you that original
message. 'Course that says nothing about the accuracy of the
information in the caption....
I'll dig the article up tonight if I can find it and check to see
if I made any errors in transcribing.
Thanks,
Dave

18.10 | Smocks | CRISPY::NASHD | | Fri Jan 17 1992 13:54 | 20 |
| We spent our last evening in the woods. I was cold, wet etc etc.
The next day I decided it's time I invested in a green and brown jacket
insted of relying on borrowing from Liz.
So what is the best material for jacket for me to use in England during
winter. I want it to be waterproof, windproof, light, have lots of pockets,
not make to much noise when moving through the woods, easily cleanable
and to last more than one winter!
I've had a Goretex jacket for civvie use for ten years but it tends to
snag easily and get torn. The other option for the material is
gaberdine with ventile proofing.
The various catalogues specify SAS smocks, Para smocks and Marine
smocks. All sell at about 120 pound sterling. I don't mind paying if
I'm going to get quality.
Can anyone tell of good or bad experiences with these or other smocks.

Dave,
if your still interested, buy a SAS smock.
I bought one a few years back and I haven't looked back.
They meet all your requirements bar -1, they are windproof, light, have
lot's of pockets, quite, easy to clean etc.
They are not waterproof, you'll never get a decent waterproof unless
you buy goretex or something similar. For really rainy day's I used to
wear my issue waterproofs under my smock, it was adequate most of the
time (except one particularly wet weekend in Wales.... another story),
For olcd whether I used my issue combat liner or a buffalo shirt, most
people I know with smocks would just wear a helly henson and be happy
enough.
Summary,
they're light, cofortable, dry quickly, I love my smock,
Loz,

RE. 12
If your after the price of a smock, mine cost me 85/90 pounds, but that
was a while ago now, Dave mentions in his mail that they now go for
around 120 pounds,

| Loz,
Thanks for the info. I never did buy a smock. I can certainly vouch for
Gore-Tex though - I bought one ten years ago and although it's been
worn a lot, it's still waterproof, windproof, warm AND it can be
cleaned in the washing machine.
If I manage to get into another unit I'll probably get a decent one.
The problem is that adding "SAS" to the description of anything seems to
increase the cost.
