I have a customer who has requested a copy of PTF level 5 as mentioned in note 61 of this conference. I have a few questions about patches in general: What is a PTF? For future patches from Digital Engineering will these be included in future media - is PTF 5 apart of the 2.1 release but the customer doesn't know it? The CSC (Customer Support Center) already has a method for distributing patches - has there been an attempt (if not should there be?) to include CICS patches in the patch system available to our customers? The muffit FTP site is an anonymous site - (anonymous is the password) but what is the User?

Hi. The PTF 5 refered to in Note 61 was the AIX patch level that was equivalent to what we released as CICS for DEC OSF/1 V1.2A. That version is now obsolete. PTFs are consolidated sets of patches. We do not release these consolidated patches but handle customer problems & patch individually. If we get sufficiently large numbers of fixes and PTFS we would then rev the release (as we did for V1.2A). Using individual fixes means that level 3 service in Hursley can track what level a customer is running. When a customer asks for a particular PTF I would suggest asking them for- a) Release level they are running b) Which problem they need a patch for It should then be possible to ask for a fix to a particular APAR through RETAIN. IBM Hursley will then build the patch if that is what is needed. IBM own the responsibility for releasing patches and therefore let them hold the patches. I do not believe that customers always understand what they are asking for when they ask for a particular patch or PTF and therefore IBM level 2 or 3 need to do some analysis on what the problem is and which patch the customer really needs. -gerry
168.2 | PTF for 2.1 to fix region crashing - AKA PMR 0108X? | CSC32::C_BENNETT | Wed Feb 05 1997 19:54 | 15
Customer is running 2.1 of CICS so this is an entirely different version. The PTF 5 that IBM eluded to was patch IX56196 and was to fix a region crash: IBM stated under PMR 0108x that: "I found another apar ( IX556783 ) which was for when 2 transactions tried to delete the same TS queue simultaneously . This fix will already be in your codebase if you have ptf set 5 or above however. " Under 2.1 PTF was set to 3 (not up to 5 yet) - how can I look at a list of PTFs and understand what fixes are available? In addition if the customer requires this PTF - WHO sends it to the customer IBM or me?

Chip, Put a reply into RETAIN against PMR 108x asking for a patch for this particular APAR. IBM are well aware (given that they build the patches, PTFs, etc) that we do not distribute PTFs for CICS for Digital UNIX -only individual patches. IBM will then make the patch available to you and then you make it available to the customer. If the customer is running V2.1 that will not have this fix yet, if they are running V2.1A they will already have the fix - CICS for Digital UNIX V2.1A is based on CICS for AIX V2.1.1. -gerry |
