NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Amdahl Corporation and
Microsoft Corp. today demonstrate new Microsoft technology, code-named
"Cedar," at Microsoft's Scalability Day event. Cedar provides connectivity
between CICS mainframe transaction monitors and Microsoft Transaction
Servers using standard Microsoft applications as an optional front-end to
data center mainframe applications. Showing that Microsoft technology is
both designed and optimized for the enterprise market, Cedar enables live
transaction handling between Windows NT(R) servers and System/390
compatible mainframes through the fastest channel connection achieved to
date between Windows NT and a System/390 compatible server.

"Our customers ask for scalable integration across their enterprise
platforms," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president for the personal and
business systems group, Microsoft Corp. "With mainframes, a comprehensive
line of Windows NT servers, high speed connectivity, and DMR Consulting
Group, Amdahl provides a complete solution required by today's enterprise
applications."

The Cedar technology demonstration showcases Amdahl's ability to provide a
robust integrated environment leveraging multiple architectures, combined
with Microsoft's ability to deliver enterprise-scale applications that can
be deployed today. The Cedar preview is part of Microsoft's roadmap of
aggressive plans to deliver more application scalability solutions over the
next twelve to eighteen months.

"Amdahl and Microsoft are working together to provide the open connection
between NT based applications and the mainframe systems, allowing new and
existing applications to scale from the data center to the desktop," said
Greg Grodhaus, vice president and general manager, Server Business Group,
Amdahl Corporation. "Together, we deliver scalable products, technologies,
and solutions strengthened by data center values such as RAS and
management, backed by world class service, and further enhanced by DMR
Consulting Group's business solutions."

The Cedar demonstration runs on an Amdahl EnVista(TM) Frontline application
server in the Microsoft Host Integration Products Units booth, integrated
with CICS transactions running on a high performance Amdahl Millennium(TM)
S/390 compatible mainframe in the Amdahl booth. Connection is through an
ESCON channel attached EnVista Central Server running Microsoft SNA Server
3.0. The demonstration features an insurance application, in which claims
are processed by the Microsoft Transaction Server using Microsoft SQL
Server 6.5 as the customer database, with the final claims filed on the
CICS system in DB/2. Since performance is critical to scalability, the
EnVista Central Server is ESCON Channel attached to the Millennium
mainframe.
