129.0. "CICS UNIX replacing MVS CICS LU6.2" by TAVIS::JONATHAN () Sun Mar 02 1997 14:54
We have a customer with 70 VAX/VMS machines in various locations, each
with a DECnet/SNA APPC/LU6.2 application.
The sites are connected by serial lines (DECnet) to a central site,
where there is a DEMSA-ST gateway which is connected to an IBM mainframe
at a service bureau with MVS/CICS. (There is an LU6.2 session for each of
the 70 sites.)
The service bureau with the IBM mainframe has lost the contract, and will be
replaced by a VAX/VMS machine at a Digital site.
The customer does not want to change his DECnet/SNA APPC/LU6.2 application.
What are possible solutions?
We are thinking about an Alpha UNIX machine with Digital UNIX CICS with a
similar CICS application to what runs today on the mainframe. (The application
on the Alpha UNIX would have to access the new VAX for the data required and
then transmit it back to the customer site.)
1. Can the Digital UNIX CICS replace the current IBM MVS/CICS without requiring
* any * changes to the customer's application?
2. Do we need a Peer Server or Domain Gwy-ST, or can the DEMSA-ST remain?
3. Do we need the UNIX APPC product?
4. Can Digital UNIX CICS work with dependent LUs, like VMS APPC/LU6.2?
5. Can we use something like DECmessageQ (DMQ) between the Alpha UNIX and
the new VAX to obtain the data, from the CICS application on the Alpha UNIX
to the new VAX and then transport it back to the customer's application?
6. Would CICS for OS/2 be a viable solution here?
7. Is this going to be a major time-consuming effort?
Cross-posted in CICS and SNAGWY Notesfiles.
Thank you,
Jonathan

Note 7029.1 CICS UNIX replacing MVS CICS LU6.2 1 of 1

Re .0
LU.2 on Digital UNIX/CICs talking directly to the LU6.2 implementation
on the VMS system directly is not possible with the standard out of
the box products.
Would the customer be willing to pay consulting $s for to do a special
ie an SI type project? If so send me mail. The reason being is that I
can see exactly how to extend the APPC product under Digital UNIX to be
able to talk directly to the APPC implementation on VMS. In this case no
gateway would be required and all existing interfaces would be maintained.
This note is not a committment to be able to do an SI project. Merely
an indication to contact me if you/the customer are interested in
looking into this further.

Dave Garrod
