DECLASER 3500 with Etherenet NIC. Customer cant get NIC card to recognise any Netware servers and hence reports Novel frame type as unknown. I have created a min network config with a W/S, 3500 and a single Netware 3.11 server connected to a standalone UTP hub. The above 3.11 server is only using 802.3 frame type and the 3500 still cant get a response from the server to set its frame type. Hence the NPutility cant find the 3500 (as it dosent have a Netware frame type set up) Customer states they have a working 3500 but its NIC is F/W vers 1.00 the failing 3500 NIC is vers 1.38. (as per replacement NIC card from logistics) Has anybody encountered this problem!!!!! Any suggestions, are most welcome.

>> DECLASER 3500 with Etherenet NIC. What kind of Ethernet NIC? Is it onboard to the system? Is it a Digital card or another vendor? If you don't know the name of the card, what kind of controller chip is on the board? >> Customer cant get NIC card to recognise any Netware servers and hence >> reports Novel frame type as unknown. To recognize a server, the frame types running on a client and server would have to be the same (at least one frame type in common). >> The above 3.11 server is only using 802.3 frame type and the 3500 still >> cant get a response from the server to set its frame type. Hence the >> NPutility cant find the 3500 (as it dosent have a Netware frame type >> set up) I'm not sure what NPutility is... What kind of a NIC is in the 3.11 server? It sounds like that is working correctly, is that right? NetWare clients generally set their frame types in a net.cfg file or they use the default frame type which is Ethernet_802.2. Please make sure you have the correct frame types loaded on the client *or* load 802.2 on your server. >> Customer states they have a working 3500 but its NIC is F/W vers 1.00 >> the failing 3500 NIC is vers 1.38. (as per replacement NIC card from >> logistics) Now, I'm really confused. None (that I know of) Digital's ethernet adapters contain firmware - do you mean a driver version? If so, which driver are you trying to load? Also, for the client, which versions of the NetWare bits are you using? For instance, on a DOS based client, you would load LSL.COM, xxxx.COM, IPXODI.COM and VLM.EXE - which versions of these files are you loading? regards, -Brenda

Brenda Thanks for the reply. The DEClaser 3500 has a DIGITAL NIC fitted to it part # LN14X-NW. The server is only using Frame Type 802.3 The client is using 802.3 Frame Type as is evident that it can login to the server. The management utility is called "NPmanage" (not NPutility...my mistake) I have no reason to suspect the NIC in the server, as the 3500 cant see or be seen by any other Netware servers when back connected back onto the network backbone. Re NIC Firmware: The 3500 with a NIC card prints out a NIC status page on power up. This page displays the Vers of the NIC F/W as well as MAC address and IP addresses etc. See page 17 of DEClaser 3500 Network Interface Card User Guide Addendum. EK-DL35P-AD.A01 (this documentation ships with the NIC card) I hope this has cleared up any confusion. Thanks Patrick Callaghan
2138.3 | Frame types still might be issue... | NETCAD::THOMPSON | Mon Apr 14 1997 13:33 | 10
What frame type does the printer default to? You might try loading all frame types (Ethernet_ii, Ethernet_snap, and Ethernet_802.2) on both server and client workstation to see if that makes a difference... -Brenda |
