| This has nothing to do with divorce but you might like to check your
credit rating, e.g. credit lines from Visa or Master even when there is
no outstanding balance, your name on any loans from when you were
married etc.. I seem to remember that when you are denied a loan you are
entitled to get a copy of the report, so perhaps the credit union can help.
But I assume this is really a rhetorical question because, as you have
discovered, whether or not you can afford to live is of no interest in MA.
Please also remember that any income is factored into child support.

| Are you claiming child support as an expense? I thought that you
didn't have to.....
Also as the previous reply stated, all income is subject to child
support, so if your X wants to nail you for that too, she could, I my
self would not, but my boyfriends X has made it clear that she wants
her cut of every dime he makes.

If you apply for a mortgage before the CS obligation is law you don't
have to claim it as an expense. I applied for a re-mortgage and
was disqualified because of the CS obligation.
If I had applied before the CS was law my remortgage would have
been approved.

| Even if Child support is "law" why would you have to claim it? As a CP
I don't claim it for tax purposes, nor do I put it down as income when
I apply for a credit card (I think it even states on the applications
that you do not have to disclose the amount if any).

Roberta,
When I applied to remortgage my home a few years ago my debt/income
ratio disqualified me according to the banks formulea.
If I didn't claim CS I would have qualified.
I was told that if the CS obligation was court ordered I would have to
claim it on the application.
Before my divorce was final I payed CS for approx two years and it
was not court ordered. If I had applied for a remortgage during that
time I would not have had to claim it. Maybe I was led astray but
thats what I was told. Hope I made it clear.

| This brings up a couple of my other pet peeves about "child support":
1) On college Financial Aid Forms, child support must be listed as
inclome if your are receiving it, but cannot be listed as debt
if you are paying it.
2) The same on food stamp applications, and probably on other "welfare"
forms.
