217.0. "Info on donating old car to Kidney Foundation" by PIET01::TRUDEAU () Fri Apr 26 1996 10:56

I was wondering if anyone here has donated an old car to the
Kidney Foundation? What's the procedure? I've called the
foundation and they said to talk to our 'tax adviser'. I talked
to our tax adviser who said to call the insurance company. I
called the insurance company and they didn't have a clue.

I was wondering how do you pick a dollar amount to place on the
vehicle? Do you go by NADA blue book retail/whole sale/trade in
value or what?

Any help greatly appreciated.

    Would the IRS be able to help?

217.2Aren't "IRS" and "help" mutually exclusive? ;^)PIET01::TRUDEAUFri Apr 26 1996 16:033
since they're the ones that'll come after me if I
put a 'wrong' number down, probably would be a good
idea to check with them.

    Just be sure you call them 3 or 5 times so you can use the "most
    votes" method to tally the different answers you'll get.

    I would expect that there is an IRS publication on charitable gifts.
    Stop by a local office, call for it, or try their web site,
    http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/ - they have most forms and publications
    online.

Publication 17 says "you must determine fair market value." It mentions
that "blue books... provide clues for making an appraisal and suggest
relative prices for comparison with current sales and offerings in your
area." I think you'd be safe to pick the highest blue book price, adjusting
for high/low mileage, repairs needed, etc.
217.6Car donation doneUSCTR1::TROMBLYTue Apr 30 1996 16:208
    I actually donated an old car about two years ago. I still have the
    information on it for my taxes so I'll look it up and let you know
    (if you still need it). I was a really simple process. They usually
    have a "junk yard" in a local area that will come to get the car as
    long as you have the title. Anyway, I'll look it up tonight if you
    want it.

217.7Kidney Car Campaign InfoUSCTR1::TROMBLYWed May 01 1996 10:3913
    I just brought in the information I had for donating a car.
    It was through the National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts
    and Rhode Island. The Headquarters is located at 180 Rustcraft Road
    in Dedham, MA. Their number is 1-800-542-4001. You may want
    to refer to the Kidney Car Campaign when calling. They will take
    some information from you and set up a pick up sight if one is
    needed. The place (usually a junk yard) that takes the car will
    call you and also bring you a copy of the book value page. This
    is how you'll know what amount to put on your Federal Tax Form.

    Hope this helps!
