| I think that the real answer is that if you must spend a lot of time and energy
finding a sex partner, then it is best to forgo sex before a significant
physical challenge as you will not be rested. If you have a regular (and
willing) sex partner, then there is no problem as it will not interfere with
your need to be rested for the event.

No sex for a week seems to be more of a punishment than training
efforts ;-)
My personal experience in this, I am a skier and times that I have
a race that is important to me, or have to meet some mogul bashing
folks the next day, being that the lower back is an essential part
in maximum performance and that sometimes after prolonged wild sex
the next day I find a slight pain in the lower back area, I would
refrain from too much exressive movement the night before or refrain
from sex altogether the night before such events.

| re .2, thanks, what a relieve rich :-) but, i have heard of top performers
being hermetically sealed off by their coaches from their willing sex partners.
do the coaches just subscribe to the 'B.S.'?
i know from experience that if i get aggressive and channel that energy into
performance, its sort of like switching into a higher gear (just like too much
fear of a competition is like stepping on the breaks - whilst of course,
overcoming fear is itself a source of energy).
so maybe the 'B.S.' is with the "no sex = aggression" equivalence?

| All I can quote is Burgis Meridith (sp), who said to Rocky:
"Stay away from women Rock, they will pick your pockets, and they are
bad for your knees!" :)
Insofar as sex before a comp event, if the coach says no, hey, listen
to him. Whats a night or two of no nookie going to hurt, besides your
pride.:) Sides, the tostorone(sp) levels climb, and your ready for an
agressive event. Kinda like no nookie for a week and watch your
personal driving behavior get a wee radical or competive. Then see how
you do if its steady for a week.;) I think thats what the BS or no BS
is about.:)

| Doing squats also release much of that male testorone in the ol bod.
Lots of good growth. So, perhaps if you do your squats, you have sex.
And still compete!:)
Also look at taking gland-u-lar vitimans.:)

| A generation or two ago, it was believed that sex before a competition
would drain a man's virlity, and sap his strength. Of course, it was
also believed that a heavy, fat-and-protein-rich meal three hours
before a bout was the proper way to feed a boxer.
Research that has been done suggests that partaking (or abstaining)
has no effect on one's athletic performance.
As for eating, complex carbohydrates the night before seems more
beneficial than protein.

| When I was big into tennis, I always played a far more-aggressive game
after a long period of abstinence. And up until maybe five years ago,
dirt bikes were a big hobby of mine - I always rode better under the
same conditions.
More proof: I have not... you know... for several months, and I just
relaced ALL my bedroom furniture, about seven hundred pounds' worth.
Hauled the old stuff down the stairs and out to the driveway, broke
open the shipping crates of the new stuff, hauled it all upstairs,
assembled it, changed the lamps around, broke down all the crates and
cardboard and sorted it for recycling, and rewarded myself with a can
of Campbell's soup. Took me a little over three hours, tops, and I
ain't even tired. I'm also back down to my high-school weight, and my
30"-waist pants have been loose the past few weeks. I also need a lot
less sleep each night.
Did anyone ever see the Barney Miller episode where Dietrich decides to
go celibate? He turns into a lunatic at work, tidying up everywhere,
doing all kinds of imaginative reports for his boss, and so on.
Personally, I think there's some truth to the phenomenon, so I guess
I agree with George and Andreas.
Think I'll go do 500 push-ups or sit-ups or maybe rebuild the 302 V8 in
the truck before I hit the sack tonight... :-)

| Without question. :-) This goes back a long way, but I remember
reading in some magazine or another (how's that for documented
references?) that increased physical activity contributes to increased,
ahem, "desires." That most definitely applies in my case.

| dunno about "desires", with all this training i'm glad to hit the sack at
night...! one desire though, which is here with strength is a healthy appetite,
three square meals a day whilst trying hard not to loose weight! :-)
'spose i'll perform better once the ordeal is over. ;-)

134.15 | For 40 days . . . | BOOKIE::J_CROCKER | | Wed Sep 14 1994 13:44 | 8 |
| Legend has it that British pro bike racer Tom Simpson refrained from
sex for 40 days before the Tour de France. Not long after he died
climbing Mt. Ventoux in the '66 Tour, his widow married his best
friend, Barry Hoban, also a pro racer.
There's been a lot of speculation on whether there was some connection
between husband's death and widow's marriage (to someone who was making a
living the same way ;-).

| as it happened, it wasn't possible to follow 'coaches' advice, been at
it right up to the night before - and boy was i relaxed when the morning
came, considering this was my first triathlon. i was so laid back that i
nearly overheard the start and promptly got run over by the masses.
but since my fan was watching, i decided to put in the extra effort and
to put up with all those kicking, pushing and shoving co-competitors who
seemed to take the event deadly serious. after recovering from the poor
start i managed to overtake quite a few and still land a #250 out of 700...
oh well,
