123.0. "Fathers United! where are they?" by SALEM::PERRY_W () Wed Apr 06 1994 17:22

Does anyone know whats going on with "Fathers United" in New Hampshire?
I read an article in last sunday's NH Newspaper that a lawsuit has been
filed by a group against FU to prevent them from helping fathers
represent themselves in court, called "Prose". I think we will all
agree that the news media tends to misrepresent most issues. Can
    someone with some insight respond?
Fathers United is a NH Fathers/children advocate group that has
been active in the past years. They were very helpfull to me when
I went through a divorce several years ago.

QUOKKA::Non_Custodial_Parents note 38 looks to have some info on
Father's United. There's also a note about a group called Justice
Pro-Se (prn. pro-say) and a man named Nat Denman. Nat was also
sued to stop him from helping people represent themselves in court.
He counter-sued under the Sherman Anti-trust act and won.

As long as they don't actually go in and represent someone in court,
or file the papers for the person I don't think they can be stopped.

Fathers United Still Meets in Concord at the Leduslative building right
behind the state capitol building in Concord NH.

The grand jury investagation that was set up to investigate us also
have broken a civil rights upholding of the 60's for the NAACP. A LIST
OF MEMBERS WAS SURRENDERED TO THE grand jury. The supreme court if this
land found this unconstutional. As the members of Fathers United will
sue the state of New Hampshire for the same.

The real unconstutional part to the whole crux is that there is this
ledgimate group of lawyers and judges, to which the laws are NOT
followed for what should be a fair and equitable divorce.

Fathers United Phone number has changed 641-2091 is the present number.

I can go on for days and waist allot of disk space telling what has
happened to people in this state. I have listed a few already. I see a
conspericy agianst fathers from having a fair and equitable settlement
in the state of New Hampshire. And as soon as this comes about, maybe
the problems with domestic violence could come to and end. For many
men, there is only a onesided playing field. And there IS no hope for
    many of them......

I hope that you are not saying that domestic violence is somehow
justified by the current state of the legal system.

justified by the current state of the legal system.

No I am not saying it is in any way shape or form justifiable. But as a
root cause, there is/maybe a connection.

123.6SUPER::MALLETTThu Apr 07 1994 22:325
I believe the root cause for domestic violence is the belief that
physical assault is a justifiable way to deal with one's anger. The
cause of the anger is secondary.

Its sad its happening. Its sad that this has become an nasty
game. Its very sad that there are forces within the judicial system
that feel threatened by these men.

Last night I went to the Manchester Superior court house hearing. It
was a hearing set up by the governer and cronies. No one knows why the
reasoning or logic. They just wanted us to talk to them on tape what
they felt was wrong with the system, talk alittle about the divorce.
Talk how many feel that the ex's beau's have better visitation rights
than they do. Perhaps, the working class man who faithfully pays his
support, and does not see his children, will get a chance to do so.

All in all it was pretty civil, no one got crazy. No one cried, most of
us had a pit in our stomachs before, during, and after the meetings.
Perhaps its old wounds surfacing again.... they will go away in a
little while..... just like they did before....

I have a few questions about the Father's United group.

    	Are they still active?

Do you think that the political resistance to this group would
hinder a man in a custody issue, if he was associated.

Can or would they recommend an attorney that has a good (given
the odds) track record for winning custody for a MAN?

I had a thought the other day based upon a 'discussion' in another
    notes file:

Why isn't there Affirmative Action for fathers in custody decisions?

Hell, there isn't even anything close to 50-50 now, let alone make up
    for past discriminations...

The fathers group is still alive and well in Manchester NH. There is a
real life attorney who is also involved with the goings on. Roger
(forgot last name) is the acting prez. 641-2091.

.14 I would think the same thoughts too. Being a custodial daddy. I can
tell you first hand that sexism is alive and unwell in the awarding to
fathers. And even as an after thought in the dating or re-mating game,
there is allot of sexism. Women, don't want you to have baggage, like
children. But, you, the male, should be prepaired to accept theirs.

You could start a new string on this topic alone. But,.....

To me, it just doesnt matter, what matters. is that my daughter is
home, she has her own bedroom, her own toy box, her cats, and her daddy
who loves her very much. And, if anyone has read some of the stirings
in NCP. You will understand where the head set is... I just about lost
my daughter. Parental kidnapping by her mother.

Massachussetts F.R.E.E.[tm]

Massachussetts, The Bay State

The Honorable William F. Weld, Governor.

 Message from the Coordinator

From Alan Finger

Hi. My name is Alan Finger and I've volunteered to be the Massachusetts
F.R.E.E.[tm] coordinator. I have three children: Eleven year old Abigail
seven year old twins: Nathan and Alex. Until recently, I shared custody with
their mother. Currently, Abby lives with me and the boys have been given
to their mother in the opening moves of a custody battle.

From my perspective, the system simply doesn't work here. Rather than
serving the needs of the children, it pits one parent against the other and
turns the children into the very pawns the system claims to avoid.

There are many things we can do at a state and local level. Here are just
a few that are on my interest list:

Make joint custody a viable, if not preferred, option.
Try to inform the media and legislators about the way the system
really works and propose changes to improve it. Try to fight media
bias in the portrayal of NCP and CP fathers.
Maintain a rating database of lawyers, judges, and social service
    providers.
Maintain a database of Mass. specific legal information and mailing
    lists.
Create a local support network for fathers involved in divorce and
custody actions. (Perhaps we want to include 2nd spouses and
    grandparents as well.)

Of course, what we actually do will be determined by our individual
 interests, time available, and dedication.

I'd like to hear from all of the Massachusetts F.R.E.E.[tm] members: Drop
me an email message (or call if you don't have access) with your name,
email address, a brief summary of your situation (if you wish), what your
priorities are for group, and- most importantly- how you would like to help.
Also feel free to send me anything else you might want me to make
 available to the group.

I'm glad to be here (helping for a change) and I look forward to hearing
 from you.

Family Law in Massachussetts

Family Law statutes for Massachussetts are not available.

Child support in Massachussetts

Massachussetts' child support profile. Massachusetts state policy on collection of
child support is particularly aggressive. They publish the pictures of "deadbeat
parents"!

Massachussetts Attorneys

F.R.E.E.[tm] members receive one hour of free telephone consultation with an
attorney in their state. Member-supplied attorney referrals; according to some of
our members - these lawyers have done a good job for them in the past.

Listing of attorneys does NOT constitute an endorsement by F.R.E.E.[tm]!
