Hi-
I am a single mom with a 10 year old son who is in Cubscouts. We just
found out that the den mother won't be leading the group anymore due
to her own son graduating to BoyScouts. They need a volunteer and I am
SERIOUSLY considering becoming the new den mother.
I would love to hear from any Dads out there who have either been
involved with Cubscouts, Boyscouts, or been a cubmaster. I am trying to
determine just how much responsibility it would be, especially since I
am new to the area here. There are currently 8-10 little boys in my son's
age range and they meet every other Monday night at one of the churches
in town. It doesn't look as though we will get a dad to volunteer so I
may be on my own.

Robyn,
I haven't done cubscouts, due to the sex of my offspring, but I am
working on coop leading a brownie troop. One of the things we are
doing to off-load the primary leader's duties is to take turns hosting
the meetings, and helping set up the meeting plans, and working on
teaching an activity or craft each meeting. The current primary leader
has done cubscouts, and says that parental involvement is a necessity
if you aren't going to go completely bonkers. A good co-leader is also
a must.

I have been involved in Scouting for 14 years. I have been both
involved in Cubs and Boy Scouting.
Plan on an effort level equivalent to a part time job... because thats
basically what it is, a part time job.
There will be records to keep, meetings to plan for and hold, and 8
to 10 ENERGETIC little boys to control.
If you like kids you may well find it very rewarding... but if your
turned off by noise, planning, and more effort to be required of you
than you probably think will be the case then don't do it.
